Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium - Powerhouses of Probiotic Benefits
Two of the most commonly used probiotic ingredients in functional foods and supplements are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These live microorganisms, when consumed in adequate amounts, can provide numerous health benefits by improving gut environment and immunity.
Lactobacillus is a type of "friendly bacteria" that naturally resides in various parts of the human body, including the mouth, intestinal tract and vagina. Some of the well-researched health-promoting Lactobacillus species used as probiotic ingredients include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei etc. Studies show that these Lactobacillus strains can help treat and prevent diarrhea, lower cholesterol levels, control irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, and reduce risk of vaginal infections in women.
Bifidobacterium is another significant group of probiotic bacteria commonly found in the human gut. The most widely used Bifidobacterium strains in Probiotic products are Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium bifidum. Research indicates that these Bifidobacterium ingredients may aid digestion, boost immune response, lower risk of allergies and alleviate digestive issues like constipation. They are also believed to possess antioxidative and anti-cancer activities within the body.
Streptococcus Thermophilus - Dairy Based Probiotic Ingredient
Alongside Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus thermophilus is another popular probiotic bacteria utilized in supplements and functional foods, especially dairy products. Native to milk, S. thermophilus aids the fermentation process during the production of yogurt and kefir. Studies show that it can help improve lactose digestion and provide protection against pathogens when consumed. This probiotic microbe is generally recognized as safe by international food regulatory bodies. Manufacturers commonly add it to probiotic yogurt and kefir formulations for its fermenting properties and associated health advantages.
Yeasts as Versatile Probiotic Ingredient
While bacteria dominate as core probiotic ingredients, certain yeast strains are also gaining recognition for their health properties. Saccharomyces boulardii is a prime example of a beneficial yeast used widely in supplements and medications for gastrointestinal issues. Research indicates that it may assist in maintaining remission from recurrent C. difficile infections, reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, and managing irritable bowel disease symptoms. Other emerging probiotic yeast ingredients under investigation include Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Debaryomyces hansenii and Candida glabrata. They too have exhibited potential for boosting gut and immune function in early stage studies.
