Eat with your eyes

It turns out that the process of seeing is also extremely important when it comes to the amount of food consumed. Unfortunately, "eating with your eyes" can promote weight gain, and this is scientifically proven.

Through the process of vision, we can recognise the quality of food and the aesthetics of its preparation. A light stimulus enters the eye through the tear film, the cornea, other parts of the organ, until it reaches the central nervous system. Several substances are required for the eye to "function" properly. 

Firstly, glucose, which is an energy substrate, its source being, of course, carbohydrates. Other essential substances include: beta-carotene (carrots, tomatoes, peas), lutein (spinach, cabbage), zeaxanthin (goji berries, corn), astaxanthin (salmon, algae).

The sense of sight while eating can interfere with other signals coming from the brain. What does this mean in practice? "We eat with our eyes", so sometimes even though we no longer feel hungry, we continue eating because the sense of sight interferes with the satiety centre located in the brain.  

An experiment conducted in France proved that we really do 'eat with our eyes'! The study consisted of the subjects being divided into two groups. One was to eat a meal blindfolded so that they could not see the contents of the plate, while the other group was to eat normally - observing what they were eating. The result of the study is surprising! Those who were blindfolded ate 25% less compared to those who could see! 

Both groups of people, felt satiated after eating. Therefore, when eating, we need to be aware of the satiety signals coming from the body. If we do not pay attention to them, we will end up with a meal seeing the bottom of a biscuit wrapper or an empty plate. The colour scheme of the surroundings is very important when eating out. 

Why do most restaurants have interiors in orange tones? The orange colour increases the appetite. We order more, eat more and ... pay more. That's why it's better not to paint the walls of your own kitchen with this colour J A colour that suppresses appetite is blue. Why not buy blue plates?

Summary: We should eat when we feel hungry, without snacking between meals. We should listen to our body's satiety signals and not just follow our eyes.
