Oil Pumps Lubricates The Compressor Many compressors have oil pumps to provide mechanical lubrication. If the oil pressure drops due to a pump failure or oil shortage, the compressor will fail. Where the oil pump is used, there is a cutout that will stop the compressor when the oil pressure is insufficient. This takes the form of a differential pressure switch with a start-up time delay. Because the inlet of the oil pump is under oil pan (suction) pressure, the pressure gauge at the pump outlet will indicate the total pressure at that point above atmospheric pressure, which is the suction (gauge pressure) plus the pump head. Any true oil pump pressure sensing element must sense both the suction pressure and the pump outlet pressure and eliminate the difference. The oil pressure cutout is connected to both sides of the oil pump, and two internal bellows are opposed to measure the difference. Since oil pressure does not occur at startup, a time delay must be set to increase oil pressure. The timer can be thermal, mechanical or electronic. The operation of the oil outlet indicates an unsafe condition, and such control is performed by a manual reset switch. The contacts on the switch can be used to operate an alarm to warn of a fault. Several compressor manufacturers offer electronic oil protection systems that provide more functionality while retaining the option of manual reset. The Oil Pumps works by circulating oil under pressure to the engine's rotating bearings, sliding pistons and camshafts. Large-capacity fluid bearings can be used to help cool the engine.
