The Buhid Mangyan are one of the eight indigenous groups living in Mindoro, Philippines. The name "Buhid" comes from "Sambuhid," which means elevated land, reflecting their mountainous origins. Their history traces back to Manggat and Sayum-ay, who are believed to be the first inhabitants of their ancestral lands and named the natural landmarks around them. The Buhid Mangyan have maintained their traditional writing system, which UNESCO has recognized as a cultural treasure.
