Beating London Traffic: 4 Smart Ways to Get Around the City

London is one of the best cities in the world. Whether you’re travelling for the day and thinking about making the move permanently, there’s a whole host of reasons to do so. But one of the much talked about downsides of London is, of course, the traffic. The capital is home to some of the UK’s busiest roads and central London in particular can be time-consuming to navigate by car. If you’re new to London, here are four alternatives to help you avoid sitting in London’s frustrating traffic jams.

Tube

London’s famous tube network is probably the most reliable way to travel around the city. However, be warned that it can be a little complicated to navigate at first. There are over 270 tube stations in London and 11 lines, so working out where you need to be is a challenge in itself.

The Transport for London website and app are extremely helpful however and once you’ve got used to the different lines, you’ll easily able to navigate your way around the city using the tube network. Be aware that services don’t run after midnight from Sunday to Thursday.

Uber/Taxi

While not the cheapest way to travel around London, Ubers and taxis are potentially the safest way to get from one destination to another. You may wonder why travelling by taxi is better than driving, but London allows taxis to utilise most bus lanes in London which are far less congested than regular roads.

Black cabs in London have a very high reputation and there’s a good chance you’ll be driven by a knowledgeable local who’ll be able to enlighten you about some of the city’s hidden gems. When travelling by Uber or a similar app, many people like the added safety that comes with the easy-to-navigate app.

London Buses

London buses are an iconic sight around London. Choosing to travel by bus is a great way to get an authentic taste of the city as you take in the famous landmarks as you travel across the city. It will also work out cheaper than travelling by Tube or Taxi due to London after fares were frozen at £1.75 while the total daily fare was capped at £5.25.

Walking

What better way to see London than by using your own two feet? If you’re prepared to battle through the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s busiest cities, walking from one destination to another is a great way to see London and, best of all, it won’t cost you a penny.

Obviously, London is a big place so we wouldn’t recommend walking from one side of the city to the other. Utilising London’s city centre car parks is a great option if you want to drive into the city centre before completing your daily activities on foot. However, beware of the infamous British weather and have an umbrella with you at all times - even in summer!
