At least 80 people killed in north-east Colombia as peace talks fail

More than 80 individuals lost their lives in northeastern Colombia over the weekend following the government's unsuccessful efforts to conduct peace negotiations with the National Liberation Army, according to a Colombian official.
Twenty additional individuals sustained injuries during the violence that has compelled thousands to escape as Colombia's army hurried to rescue people yesterday, as stated by William Villamizar, governor of North Santander, where a significant number of the murders occurred.
Among those killed are community leader Carmelo Guerrero and seven individuals
who attempted to negotiate a peace agreement, as reported by a government ombudsman agency that released information late on Saturday.

Officials indicated that the assaults took place in various towns situated in the Catatumbo region near the border with Venezuela, with at least three participants in the peace discussions being abducted.
Thousands of individuals are fleeing the area, with some taking refuge in the nearby verdant mountains or seeking assistance at government shelters.
"We were caught in the crossfire," remarked Juan Gutiérrez, who escaped with his family to a temporary refuge in Tibú after being compelled to abandon their animals and possessions. "We had no time to grab our things. ... I hope the government remembers us. ... We are helpless here."
