About Bonds

A Bond is a high-security Debt instrument. It lets an entity raise money and fulfil its capital needs. It is usually a category of Debt that the borrowers avail themselves of from individual investors for a particular tenure. Bonds are generally issued by corporates, the government, municipalities, and other entities to pay for their projects.

Features of Bonds

You may want to invest in Bonds. However, they have different features that you should know. Understanding these features could enable you to optimise your investment strategy and make informed decisions. A few of the characteristics of Bonds include:

  • Face value

This is also referred to as the par value of the Bond. It is the sum the issuer of the Bond will pay the bondholder at maturity.

  • Credit quality

Credit rating agencies offer Bond ratings depending on the creditworthiness of the issuer.  This assists investors in evaluating the risk associated with a particular Bond. The Bond’s credit quality reflects the issuer's ability to meet its financial obligations.

  • Maturity date

It is also known as the redemption date. It is the date on which the Bond matures. On this date, the issuer of the Bond is obligated to repay the principal amount to the bondholder.

  • Principal

This is the initial sum you invest in a Bond.

  • Interest rate

Usually, it is a pre-determined percentage of the Bond’s face value. It is generally paid out periodically over the life of the Bond.

  • A High-Yield Bond

Companies with lower credit ratings issue High-Yield Bonds. These Bonds provide higher interest rates to compensate for the increased risk.

  • A Fixed-Interest Bond

Fixed-Rate Bonds offer a predictable income for investors. They pay a set interest rate throughout the life of the Bond.

  • A Zero-Coupon Bond

This Bond is issued at a discount to its face value and redeemed at face value at maturity. Zero-Coupon Bonds do not pay periodic interest. They are typically a good choice for individuals looking to lock in a fixed return for a particular period.
