The History and Spread of Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus. The virus originated in rodents and primates in West and Central Africa. The monkeypox virus spreads through close physical contact with an infected person or animal. Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research. The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox. Since then, monkeypox has been reported in humans in other central and western African countries, including Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia and Cameroon.

In 2022, for the first time ever, monkeypox spread globally outside of Africa. As of August 2022, over 40,000 cases have been reported to WHO from over 100 different countries and territories. The large outbreak was sparked by multiple introductions of Monkeypox Treatment virus infections into several countries. Genetic analysis of virus samples indicates there have likely been multiple introductions of monkeypox independently into different countries.

Signs and Symptoms of Monkeypox

The symptoms of monkeypox usually start with fatigue, fever, headaches, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. Within 1 to 3 days of the onset of fever, a rash usually develops, starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body.
