Umbilical cord blood refers to the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth. During pregnancy, mother cells and fetal cells get transferred to stimulate the mother and infant’s immune system to develop their immune system & prepare for childbirth. This makes cord blood a rich source of immunity & extracting the stem cells cryogenically from the immune system after delivery makes the immune system immortal and makes its use possible for medical purposes in the future.

The process of cord blood banking refers to extracting the stem cell from the umbilical blood cord cryogenically and then freezing them for later use. There are two types of umbilical blood cord banks available. These are: Public and private banks.

People can store cord blood in private cord blood banks or donate to public cord blood banks.

Private Bank: Private cord blood banks store cord blood for use by children or families. Cord blood belongs to the parents. Private banks can provide donations only if the donor permits, or autologous transplants.

Directed donation is the stem cells stored in the cord blood bank for donor family members to use when they have diseases that stem cells can help treat. In these cases, private banks sometimes store cord blood for free. Autologous transplantation uses stem cells from the cord blood itself.

Public Bank: State Cord Blood Bank collects donated cord blood which is availed to people in need. Anyone in need can use cord blood either For research purposes or medical purpose or the donor can also refuse to donate. State-owned stem cell banking also provide targeted donations i.e. Cord blood donation.

The type of graft from the state bank is an allograft. Allogeneic transplantation uses cord blood stem cells to treat diseases in people other than the donor. Allogeneic transplantation is believed to be more common than autologous transplantation. Allogeneic transplantation requires a good match between the donor and the person receiving the transplant. There are some similarities between the cells of the two people. If there is not a strong enough match, the immune system of the person receiving the transplant will reject the cells, which means that the transplant will not work properly.
