Nickel Powder: Exploring the Unique Characteristics, Manufacturing Processes, and Applications of Nickel particles
Properties of Nickel Powder
Nickel particles is a fine particulate form of pure nickel metal that has a number of unique physical and chemical properties. Due to its high melting point of 1453°C, Nickel particles retains its solid form even at very high temperatures. This allows it to withstand heating and cooling cycles very well without deformation. Nickel particles is a silvery-white colored metal that is insoluble in water but soluble in acids. It has a relatively high density of 8.9 g/cm3 which provides strength without adding too much weight. Chemically, nickel is resistant to corrosion from air, water, alkalis and many acids. This corrosion resistance is a very useful property that gives Nickel particles wide application potential. Magnetically, nickel is attracted to magnetic fields which is important for certain industrial uses requiring electromagnetic properties.
Production of Nickel Powder
Nickel Powder particles is commercially produced through a process called electrodeposition or electroplating. In this process, a nickel anode and a cathode are placed in an aqueous electrolyte solution containing nickel ions. When an electric current is passed through the solution, nickel ions in the solution migrate and are plated out as a thin film onto the cathode surface. This plating occurs extremely rapidly, allowing for controlled manufacturing of Nickel particles. The plated nickel film is then carefully separated from the cathode by various mechanical processes like scrubbing, scraping or jetting without destroying its powder form. Some producers also utilize hydrogen reduction or carbonyl decomposition methods to make refined Nickel particles directly rather than through electrodeposition and separation. Regardless of the specific process used, tight controls are required to consistently produce Nickel particles with controlled particle size and consistent purity.
