Guide to Angular: ng-template, ng-container, ngTemplateOutlet

Angular is an amazing front-end framework that makes developing dynamic and robust web applications easy. One of the most flexible features in this regard is the Angular template language—this lets Angular development services developers build quite complex user interface elements with minimal difficulty.

The following blog will dive into three crucial Angular constructs: ‘ng-template’, ‘ng-container’, and ‘ngTemplateOutlet’. By the end of the blog, you'll have a good sense of how to use these tools to produce clear and maintainable, dynamic UIs in Angular and hire a dedicated Angular developer in India.

What is ‘ng-template’?

The ‘ng-template’ directive forms one of the base fundamentals of Angular templates. It allows you to create an HTML snippet within the template body and not display it at the moment. It can, however, be rendered and injected into the DOM whenever required. It can be thought of as a blueprint for rendering parts of your UI.

Key features of ng-template:

  • Deferred Rendering: Any content inside ng-template is not rendered at the time, but it gets instantiated at runtime when needed.

  • Reusable Templates: A ng-template can be defined at first within an application and then used at various places.

  • Conditional Rendering: Used together with directives, such as *ngIf, ng-template helps for conditional rendering in the UI.

Example Usage:

Below is an example of ‘ng-template’ combined with ‘*ngIf’:

<div *ngIf="isVisible; else template">

  <p>The content is visible!</p>

</div>

<ng-template #template>

  <p>The content is hidden.</p>

</ng-template>

In the example above, whenever the evaluated value of ‘isVisible’ is ‘false’, the message that's in the ‘ng-template’ will be shown.

What Is ‘ng-container’?

‘ng-container’ is a structural directive followed by Angular. It acts as a logical container in Angular templates. It does not wrap your content inside a DOM element but allows you to group DOM elements and apply Angular directives to it.

Use of ‘ng-container’ and its Functionalities:

  • No Extra DOM Elements: Unlike regular HTML elements, the element ng-container won't be found in the final HTML by rendering. It is just a logical container.

  • Directives Multiple: Useful in the directive groups or multiple structural elements for the logical grouping by not adding in the extra nodes in the DOM.

  • Structures Conditional and Repeated: These have to be used for conditioning a group of elements of structures or repetitions.

Example Usage:

Below is an example of ‘ng-container’ used with basic conditional styling:

<ng-container *ngIf="isLoggedIn; else loggedOut">

  <p>Welcome back, user!</p>

</ng-container>

<ng-template #loggedOut>

  <p>Please log in.</p>

</ng-template>

Here, ‘ng-container’ has been used to group the content that should be rendered ‘isLoggedIn’ is ‘true’, but without adding any extra markup to the DOM.

Leveraging ‘ngTemplateOutlet’:

‘ngTemplateOutlet’ is a strong directive that inserts templates into the DOM dynamically. The abilities of ngTemplateOutlet give you the ability to reuse ng-template content somewhere else in your application or pass templates as input to components.

Important features of ‘ngTemplateOutlet’:

  • Dynamic Component Injection: You can dynamically inject components at runtime.

  • Template Reuse: Templates could be used multiple times in multiple parts of the application.

  • Flexible Component Design: Allows ANY flexible design pattern as passable templates as input to components.

Example: You have a requirement where you want to display different templates per different user bases on their Roles dynamically. here is an example:

<ng-template #adminTemplate>

  <p>Welcome, Admin!</p>

</ng-template>

<ng-template #userTemplate>

  <p>Welcome, User!</p>

</ng-template>

<div [ngTemplateOutlet]="currentRole === 'admin' ? adminTemplate : userTemplate"></div>

In this example, ‘ngTemplateOutlet’ is used to choose between adminTemplate and userTemplate based on the value of currently.

Putting It All Together:

Let's put ng-template, ng-container, and ngTemplateOutlet together in a more complex example to see how they can all fit together :

<ng-template #defaultTemplate>

<p>Default template content.</p>

</ng-template>

<ng-template #customTemplate let-data="data">

<p>Custom template content with data: {{ data }}</p>

</ng-template>

<ng-container *ngIf="isCustom; else defaultTemplate">

<ng-container *

<p> Default content when custom template is not used. </p>

</ng-template>

Below are the schematic derivatives of the above example:

  • ‘ng-container’ with the sole purpose of rendering content based on custom.

  • ‘ngTemplateOutlet’ inserts a custom template based on the condition with context containing some data.

  • If ‘iscustom’ is set to false then the ‘defaulttemplate’ is a condition.

Conclusion:

Angular's ‘ng-template’, ‘ng-container’, and ‘ngTemplateOutlet’ provide powerful methods for better efficiency in handling and rendering dynamic content in your applications.
