Footwear protector, also known as booties or overshoes, are disposable covers that are worn over shoes or boots. They are used in industrial facilities, hospitals, research labs, and other settings where contamination control is important. Footwear protector create a barrier that helps prevent unwanted materials like dirt, debris, microorganisms, and chemical residues from transferring between the outside environment and sensitive interior areas through the soles of shoes.

Types of Shoe Cover

There are a few main types of footwear protector available on the market:

- Non-slip footwear protector have textured bottoms to help provide traction and prevent slips and falls on wet or Shoe Cover surfaces. They are commonly used in environments where floors may be wet.

- Bouffant footwear protector extend higher up the leg than standard covers. Used in sterile environments like operating rooms, they help block dirt and debris from entering at the top of the shoe.

- Elastic footwear protector secure around the top and ankle area with an elasticized edge. They form a tighter barrier than standard covers.

- Disposable plastic footwear protector are made of lightweight polypropylene or polyethylene plastic. They are inexpensive, single-use covers usually sold in boxes.

- Reusable fabric footwear protector are made of materials like nylon or polyester. They can be laundered and reused multiple times, making them more sustainable than disposables. However, they require more intensive cleaning protocols.

Application and Removal Process

Proper application and removal of footwear protector is important to maximize their contamination control effectiveness. Workers should:

- Inspect shoes for debris or contamination before applying covers.

- Stretch footwear protector open wide at the top and pull them on over shoes, smoothing out any wrinkles.

- Secure elasticized covers snugly around the top and ankle areas.

- Check that the entire shoe bottom and sides are fully covered.

- Use designated “dirty” and “clean” areas for applying and removing covers.

- Roll covers down and off inside out, containing any contaminants picked up.

- Discard disposable covers immediately in lined waste bins.

- Wash hands thoroughly after removing covers before touching clean areas.
