Material and Construction

Leather boots provide the best protection against abrasions and impacts in a crash. Look for full-grain leather upper and soles that are at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick for durability. Some boots use hard composite safety toe caps for added protection of the feet and lower legs. The upper should be lace-up or zipper style for a secure, snug fit. Boots with ankle support help prevent twisting injuries in an accident.

CE certification

Boots labeled as "safety certified" or bearing a CE certification meet European Union standards for impact and compression resistance. CE approved motorcycle boots are tested at velocities and forces much greater than ordinary footwear to prove they can protect the feet and lower legs in a crash. The CE certification indicates the boot design, construction, and materials provide impact and abrasion protection appropriate for motorcycle riding.

Ankle Support

In addition to CE impact certification, ankle protection is an important factor when choosing Motorcycle Boot. Good motorcycle will have some feature that helps support and protect the ankle joint. Rigid external ankle armor locks the boot into place and prevents the foot from twisting under impact. Internal ankle supports molded to the footwork equally well. For longer rides, boots with slight heel lifts allow comfortable shifting of weight for longer periods in the riding position.

Heel and Toe Coverage

Boots should cover the entire heel with a thick upper and rigid sole for maximum protection against back-of-heel impact and road abrasions. Toe coverage is also crucial, with reinforcement in the toe box area and covering the front at least halfway up the foot. Open-toed or low-cut boots leave the toes and foot too exposed to potential injury from impacts or sliding across rough pavement.

Waterproofing

Tough leather motorcycle may still allow water penetration over time. Look for boots designed for all-weather riding with waterproof and breathable membranes incorporated into the upper. Welted or taped seams further prevent water entry. Boots rated as fully waterproof are suitable for riding in rain, snow, or other wet conditions. Some even include insulated linings for cold weather riding.
