Non-Invasive Treatment Devices

Modern medical technology has advanced varicose vein treatment methods significantly. Non-invasive devices offer effective treatment solutions without surgery. Laser treatment and radiofrequency ablation are two popular non-surgical options.

Laser treatment uses laser energy to close damaged veins. A thin, lighted fiber is inserted into the vein through a small puncture in the skin. The laser delivers thermal energy, heating and sealing the vein shut. This Varicose Vein Treatment Devices is often performed as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia. Patients can return to normal activity within a few days. Risks are minimal but may include minor bruising.

Radiofrequency ablation also treats varicose veins by closing them without surgery. A catheter with a tiny electrode is threaded through the vein. Radio waves from the electrode generate heat to scar and seal the vein. Like laser treatment, it is done as an outpatient procedure. Recovery time is short and side effects are mild. Both laser treatment and radiofrequency ablation have high success rates for eliminating varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy Injection Treatment

For smaller, spider veins near the surface of the skin, sclerotherapy injections are common. A solution called a sclerosant is injected directly into the problem veins. The sclerosant damages the inner lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and gradually disappear. Several treatments may be needed to fully address a patient's spider veins. While injected under ultrasound guidance, sclerotherapy injections cause minimal discomfort and leave little risk of side effects. Bruising is likely but fades relatively quickly. For many patients, sclerotherapy offers an effective nonsurgical solution for unsightly facial and leg spider veins.

Endovenous Ablation Therapy

Another minimally invasive treatment involves inserting a catheter into the vein and delivering laser, radiofrequency or steam energy directly inside the vein. This endovenous thermal ablation technique seals the vein from within, effectively closing it off over time without surgical stripping. Recovery is fast compared to traditional vein stripping, making it appealing for active patients. Risks are low but may include minor pain, bruising or swelling at the treatment site that usually resolves within a few weeks. Endovenous ablation therapy provides durable varicose vein treatment results for many patients.

Venous Stripping

For more severe varicose vein cases, traditional vein stripping surgery may be recommended to remove damaged, dilated veins. During this procedure performed under regional or general anesthesia in an operating room or outpatient surgery center, small incisions are made near the problem veins. Using surgical instruments and visualization methods, the surgeon hooks, ligates and removes the varicose vein through the incisions. Stripping eliminates the unhealthy vein permanently but does require surgical incisions, a short recovery time and slightly higher risks compared to minimally invasive techniques. However, for large, bulging varicose veins, stripping remains an effective treatment option to prevent long-term complications.
