When faced with pesky health issues like uncontrollable urine leaks, many of us soldier on, driven by fear, embarrassment, or simply not knowing what to do. However, living with such issues longer than necessary isn't the only option.

"There are women who think leaking is just part of life—normal and unavoidable," says Nina Turcotte, EMT.

Turcotte and Meredith Norris, BSN, RN, CURN, are patient navigators with Urology Partners of North Texas (UPNT) Incontinence Center. Both women have extensive experience in healthcare, with a passion for urology. Their focus is now on making a difference for those struggling with overactive bladder (OAB).

Understanding Overactive Bladder (OAB)

OAB occurs when the bladder muscles spasm or contract involuntarily, causing a strong and urgent need to urinate, often without much urine in the bladder. This urge is frequent and hard to control. While more common in people in their 40s and 50s, OAB isn't always age-related. Neurological disorders can also trigger it. Nearly 30% of men and 40% of women in the U.S. experience OAB symptoms.

Fortunately, there are effective treatments, including minimally invasive options. Lifestyle changes and medications can sometimes eliminate leaks, while Botox injections can calm the nerves and muscles around the bladder. For more advanced cases, InterStim procedures or posterior tibial nerve therapy can stop OAB leaks.

Your Personal Guide to Overcoming OAB

At UPNT, each OAB patient is paired with a dedicated patient navigator. This VIP service provides a direct connection to a knowledgeable specialist, bypassing call centers to nurture a personal bond between patients and their navigator.

"We are their advocates, champions, and teachers," says Norris.

"We help patients understand their disease, its causes, and treatment options," Turcotte adds.

Patient navigators work closely with patients through regular phone check-ins, starting about three weeks into their treatment plan. Patients are encouraged to call whenever they have questions or concerns, free of charge.

From Embarrassment to Empowerment

UPNT’s comprehensive approach involves physicians, physician assistants, patient navigators, and patients working together.

"The doctor leads the treatment plan, whether it’s pelvic floor therapy, medication, or another procedure," Norris explains. "As patient navigators, we extend that care, discussing behavior modifications, daily fluid intake, and irritant foods and drinks. If initial treatments don’t work, we explore the next steps."

Turcotte adds, "Patients call back if they experience side effects or if treatments aren’t as effective as hoped. We listen and help figure out the issue to get them the right help."

But beyond expert advice, both women know their genuine care makes a significant difference.

"They know we really care," says Turcotte. "My purpose is to be their advocate and their voice if they’re uncomfortable or things aren’t working."

Navigating Life Without Leaks

Sara, an OAB sufferer for 15 years, found relief at UPNT’s Incontinence Center. She appreciated having a patient navigator. "It’s nice to talk with someone who has all your information and can advise you or check with the doctor. I programmed her number into my phone."

When Sara noticed her OAB medication raised her blood pressure, she called her navigator, who suggested a new medication, Gemtesa, without that side effect. After just a few days, Sara saw a dramatic improvement.

For Turcotte and Norris, every success is a reminder of their mission: helping people live without embarrassing bladder conditions.

"Patients often say, 'If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t understand my condition.' That’s extremely rewarding," says Norris.

Turcotte agrees, "Hearing patients say they’re dry and their life has changed is the best reward."
