Print labels are an integral part of the manufacturing and logistics process. They are used across industries for identification, instructions, pricing, and traceability purposes. However, the demands on printed tag technology are continually evolving to match the needs of modern manufacturing and shipping environments. This article explores some of the key trends driving innovation in printed tag solutions.

Advancing Printing Technologies

Traditional printed tag technologies like thermal transfer and direct thermal printing have served businesses well for decades but have limitations in terms of print quality, durability, and sustainability. To address these challenges, manufacturers are embracing newer digital printing methods. Inkjet Print Label allows for photographic quality prints on a wider range of substrates at higher speeds. It also supports on-demand printing with mass customization capabilities. Laser printing delivers high resolution barcodes and text on heat-sensitive materials without using ribbons. LED printing is gaining ground with its low energy use and ability to print on rough, glossy and plastic surfaces.

New Substrates for Extended Durability

Whether labels need to withstand harsh chemical washes or endure use in outdoor environments, the substrates they are printed on require robustness. Polyester and polypropylene are commonly used plastics that offer excellent durability and chemical resistance. However, manufacturers now have eco-friendly plant-based options like PLA and paper-based substrates like tyvek and kraft that balance sustainability with performance. Self-laminating and overlaminate coating technologies provide additional protection against abrasion, moisture, UV light and other environmental factors.

Optimized Form Factors for Applications

While roll fed labels dominate general packing, new industries require specialized label shapes. Produce labels are die-cut into oval or circle shapes for a seamless product wrap. Asset tags use a D-ring attachment for hanging on pipes and equipment. RFID/NFC inlays are embedded into reel-fed wristband formats for event ticketing. Cut and stack labels address inventory management needs with unique sizing. There is also increasing adoption of digital print methods for flexible packaging, wraparound sleeves and multipack configurations. These optimized form factors elevate brand messaging while streamlining operations.
