Engine Oil Pumps Replacement
If the Oil Pumps is installed outside the engine, it can be accessed from under the valve cover.
If not, apply the handbrake and support the engine end of the car on the axle frame. Plug other wheels.
On the externally installed pump, remove the oil filter. On the engine with the pump in the crankcase, drain the engine oil and remove the chassis.
Removing the oil pan pan may involve removing or raising the engine. If so, it is best to hand over the repair work to the main local distributor. In some cars, this may also mean removing the gearbox. If you have any questions, please consult your dealer.
Disassemble, inspect and reinstall the pump
Place a tray or rag under the engine to collect the oil droplets, and then loosen the bolts that secure the pump to the engine block.
When withdrawing the pump, mark the position of the pump drive shaft so that it can be replaced in the exact same way.
The drive shaft sometimes drives the distributor. On such engines, remove the distributor cover and mark the position of the rotor arm.
If the rotor arm is moved at any time-if the engine is already rotating, the ignition timing must be reset, for example.
On externally mounted pumps with helical gears, the gears can usually be placed back in any position.
Use a rag moistened with gasoline. If necessary, use a spatula tool to carefully remove dirt and retain any gaskets on the pump mounting flange.
Be careful not to damage the mounting surface on the pump or engine. Usually only externally installed pumps have gaskets.
Make sure to clean the working parts of the pump thoroughly.
On an externally installed pump, install a new gasket on the flange of the pump and apply it with gasket sealant when positioning the drive shaft to secure it in place.
Before pushing the pump back into place, make sure the drive shaft is properly aligned. If it cannot be positioned correctly, pull out the pump and move the drive shaft slightly and try again.
Reinstall and tighten the car fixing nut or bolt to the torque wrench setting recommended in the car service manual.
On the internally installed pump, reinstall the oil pan and replace the oil.
For both types, always install a new oil filter. Before reinstalling it on the car, fill the pump with clean engine oil.
Run the engine gently until the oil pressure rises to a normal level, and then check for oil leakage.
Check the oil pressure relief valve
Unscrew the plug, and then remove the valve spring and plunger or ball.
The pressure relief valve is usually installed in the oil pump body and sometimes in the engine block.
The valve consists of a ball or plunger fixed by a spring. If the engine oil pressure is low (indicated by an oil pressure gauge or oil pressure warning light), the safety valve may not be installed correctly. The cause may be weak or damaged release springs, dirty engine oil, or worn oil pumps.
Most valves can be disassembled, but some types cannot. Before attempting to check the valve, you may have to check its location in the car service manual or by consulting your local dealer.
If the valve is inside the oil pump, remove the pump. Unscrew the plug that fixes the relief valve in the oil pump body or engine block, and then remove the valve spring and plunger or ball.
If the ball or plunger gets stuck in the valve hole, try to release it gently with a thin screwdriver. Be careful not to scratch or damage anything, especially the valve hole. Scratches in holes, balls or plungers will allow oil to flow through the valve, thereby reducing oil pressure.
Thoroughly clean all parts with paraffin, petroleum solvent or gasoline, and check the valve ball or plunger for signs of swelling caused by wear or pitting.
Some types of oil relief valves cannot be removed.
Check the spring to see if the coil is broken. To check its weakness, compare its length with the length of the new spring.
Use a lint-free cloth moistened with paraffin or gasoline to clean the valve holes, making sure to remove any blockages or deposits.
If any safety valve parts wear out, discard them and purchase a new valve assembly.
