With braces, if you have puffy or swollen gums, it would be worth getting it checked out. However, not all swollen gums are a sign that something is wrong. Several orthodontic patients experience minor gum issues that end up being nothing to worry about. For others, braces are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, and the build-up of plaque, especially when the patient lacks proper oral hygiene. It can also lead to gum problems.

Relationship of swollen gums with braces

The placement of braces in your mouth is a bit difficult to manage. Besides, braces will make your life worse as right from eating, drinking, speaking and teeth cleaning, everything is going to be very difficult for you in the time to come. When the teeth are not cleaned well, it results in an increase in the number of bacteria around the appliances that can cause changes in the gums.

Some of the orthodontic treatments like Dallas GA braces can cause gum overgrowth without any clinical signs of gingival inflammation or poor oral hygiene by tissue bunching up as teeth are pushed together forcefully. It may also lead to loss of gum tissue and recession formation in a few patients if the gum tissue is thin and the teeth are moved off the supporting bone. In some situations, the gum tissue can improve if an extremely displaced tooth is returned to the supporting tissue. A study has also supported the claim that 10-12% of orthodontic treatment leads to gum recession.

All we want to say is, that the swollen gums should not be ignored under any circumstances. They can be a sign of periodontal disease. If you experience such swollen gums for more than 2-3 days, it is better to book an appointment with your Dallas GA orthodontist before it is too late. There are chances that the gum disease might cause long-term damage to the soft tissue and, if not treated, can destroy the bone that surrounds your teeth. Once this bone is destroyed, it will not provide the adequate support your teeth demand, causing them to become loose and may even fall out.

This kind of infection is often triggered due to poor brushing and flossing habits, and some people may also have weaker resistance to bacteria build-ups, resulting in a more pronounced infection. You must never allow bacteria to sit and relax on your teeth and gums as it will lead to gum inflammation. In the initial stages, the gums will recede away from your teeth creating small pockets between the gums and teeth.

With any issues with the gums during your treatment of braces, your Dallas GA orthodontist shall help.
