Living the student life opens up our horizons to so many exciting opportunities.

When it comes to experiencing the student life most of us look forward to meeting new people and socialising with others. It gives us the freedom to choose the way we want to live, gain more independence and learn how to adapt to a new environment. So, why do we find it hard to cope with student life? We sometimes do not know what to expect when we move out. People go through so many changes and face new challenges in life.. Sometimes we just need to learn how to react positively to problems that come our way. It’s important that you get to access the right people for your mental health support. You should never feel alone. For some of us, it can just be that you find out that you have a mental health related issue such as depression.

Below are five ways to help you cope better with student life:

1.Beat stress

When you recognise that you’re feeling stressed, try and do something about it before it gets worse…. A study published in the journal Trustees of Dartmouth College found that students used an Android Sensing App to measure their academic levels with increased workload. Some people can become highly stressed with the fear of failing grades. Try to pick up some sort of exercise you love doing, in order to release some of those happy hormones. It will make you feel relaxed and energised.

2.Take time out for a catnap

If you are tired, your worries will get on top of you…try and get some sleep regularly, so you can perform better in your studies. Try to get at least 8 to 10 hours sleep regularly. American Psychological Journal found students who are sleep deprived are at a risk of car accidents and suicide. Further research suggests when you don’t have enough sleep there is an increased chance of depression; anxiety and weight gain, reported by National mental Health Association. So, how can we make sleep our number one priority? If you find you are being distracted by things around you such as your mobile phone… just switch it off. You can also create a sleep pattern and relax before bedtime. You can relax your mind by reading a book, running a bath or go for a long walk. If you are really busy with life, you can nap longer during weekends or sleep during your free periods.

3.Cherish your personality

Mental health can affect nearly every person living on this earth… It can become a stigma for some people. I guess it makes sense why many people are not so open about this topic area. Did you know that 50 % of us experience a form of mental health problem from 14 years and above?  Things around us can have an impact on our mood.  For example the weather, relationship, financial or relocating. If you are already taking medication to help you get better, you may experience some negative feelings, which is most likely caused by the side effects of the psychiatric drugs. When your feelings are unbearable and getting on top of you, a quick visit to the doctors will help you, get reassurance and support. Is it the first time you are feeling weird? and now it’s an on going feeling, as if you are not your self anymore…. Have a go at filling out a quiz about your feelings and take it from there. You can always talk about your problems when things are not going your way. Talking to a therapist or counselor about your problems may be a good way to offload. But, sometimes we just need someone to listen to us in order to make us feel better.

4.Mingle with others

You can tone down your social life near exam time…. but for now, try to put your exams first. Do you need help on how to get cracking? You can create a timetable to help you divide your topics for each module.

Timetables are a useful way to be organised…. Here is a group of students who talk about their secrets to passing their exams with high graders. Remember, when your exams are finally over you deserve to hang out with the people you love. Your friends can help boost your confidence and self-esteem. We all deserve to be happy and enjoy life to the fullest. Try to hang out with positive people. Having a laugh will make you feel light hearted and relaxed.
