Yoga's Evolution, Change, and Evolution Throughout History

Through the Tantric tradition, yoga made its way into civilization 10,000 years ago. After archaeologists began excavating countless statues from ancient city grounds, recollection of the 10,000-year-old tradition, evidence of deities resembling Shiva and Parvati was discovered in the Indus Valley civilization. This was the yoga of the pre-Vedic, pre-Aryan era, when the top tradition flourished in different parts of India. Tantra is a combination of two Sanskrit words: tanoti and trayati. Trayati translates to "freedom," while Tanoti implies "expansion." Tantra is a path to emancipation from the world's bonds of physical identification with the body and the objects that go with it.

The eight fold path of yoga is a term used to describe Patanjali's yoga sutras. Yama (self-control), niyama (self-observation), asana, pranayama, pratyahara (sensory withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and samadhi were the ninth sequences. The eight fold road provides a clear perspective of the spiritual journey, whether practised in order or as a whole system. It also laid out a plan for bringing individual consciousness into alignment with the universal cosmos.
