Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart, was a man who dared to take chances and was able to take advantage of every opportunity. Born to Thomas and Nancy Walton on March 29, 1918 in Oklahoma, Sam lived on the estate until he was five years old. His dream of opening his own shop came true in the fall of 1945. He bought a shop in Newport with the help of $20,000 from his father-in-law and $5,000 of his own savings. Sam's shop comes from the   Butler Brothers franchise leading to convenience stores. With their help, Sam's store was able to lead sales in 6 states. His strategy is to provide a very varied stock of goods, very cheap prices, easy to visit locations, and stay open longer than most other stores (especially Christmas time).

As a pioneer of the discount merchandising strategy, namely buying directly from the supplier who offered the lowest price, Sam was able to sell cheaper goods in larger quantities. This strategy of playing with high volume allows him to negotiate a cheaper purchase price for the next purchase. That way, the volume of sales and profits also increase.

In 1954, Sam re-opened a store with his brother in a store center with his brother in a shopping center in Ruskin Heights, Kansas City. He finally decided to concentrate on the retail business by opening larger stores called Walton's Family Center.
