  • What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)?
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is an umbrella term which describes the compression of blood vessels, nerves, arteries, and veins as they exit through the space between the collar bone and the first rib. This space is known as the thoracic outlet (cervico thoraco brachial) region. Neurovascular compression, that is compression of nerves and blood vessels, often causes pain, pins and needles or reduced sensation in the arm, shoulder and neck. If left untreated, TOS can lead to increased pain and decreased function of the structures involved and in severe cases, blood clots can form which is extremely detrimental to health.
    Reasons
 Physical trauma such as injuries from a car accident
     Pregnancy
     Repetitive injuries
 Anatomical defects (e.g- having an extra rib)
 Injury to the back or neck
     Poor posture
    Symptoms
 Pain or weakness in the neck, shoulder and arm
 Arms which tire quickly and/or easily*
 Tingling or discomfort in the fingers
 Pins and needles and/or reduced sensation of touch
 Cold sensitivity of the fingers, headache, muscle weakness and/or swelling
*The symptoms often get worse when arms are held up above the head. The longer the arms stay up, the worse the symptoms can get.
    Treatment
    Physical therapy- Myotherapy treatment
     Lifestyle changes
     Maintain good posture
 Avoid any exercises that cause pain
 Take regular short breaks especially for the arms throughout the day at work
If you have symptoms of TOS, contact us today so our Myotherapist can develop a treatment plan which is individually catered to target your pain and get you back to full recovery.
