WHAT IS AN AQUATHLON?

Imagine if a triathlon didn't have a bike leg. Look no further than the Aquathlon.
From Ironman events to seasonal fixtures, triathlon races are frequented by seasoned athletes and weekend warriors alike. However, if you take out cycling, you will find an aquathlon. This is the less well-known sport that consists of a swim sandwiched between two running segments. Elise Metcalf is a triathlete.
What is the format for an aquathlon?
Aquathlon races demand the same gruelling multi-sport endurance as a triathlon without the bike leg, allowing the swim to become the focal point.
World Triathlon has established that the minimum distance for an Aquathlon is 2.5km. Competitors will begin with a 1km swim, followed by a 5km run. The longer courses feature a 2km swim followed by a 10km run. It's also worth noting that aquathlons held in winter months often use the swim/run format.
Is the Aquathlon suitable to beginners?
Aquathlons are more accessible than triathlons. The removal of the bike leg reduces both the amount of kit required to participate and the number of disciplines to train for.
