The national team's game was the most watched program of the year
More than 5 million Portuguese watched the Quinas team draw, having been the first game of the national team with the highest audience in the last three European football championships.
The debut of the national team at Euro2016 was followed by more than 5 million Portuguese through RTP, having broken the record for the most watched programs of the year, according to data from IPG Mediabrands.
According to the same data, "about 70% of viewers who were watching television at the time of the game (20h), connected to RTP1 to follow the game live, which translated into an average of 3.4 million of viewers, having even reached 5 million Portuguese if we talk about total audience".
The tie against Iceland "allowed RTP1 to lead the open channels, with an average share in the total day of 29.4% - an increase of 15.2 percentage points compared to the average for the month of May".
Sport TV, which also broadcasts the European championship games, had an average audience of 62,000 viewers.

The first game of the group stage was also the most watched compared to the start of the Quinas national team in the last three European football championships.
The game against Iceland was the one with the highest audience, with more than 400 thousand Portuguese than the game against Germany in the 2012 European Championship.
IPG Mediabrands underlines that the three starting games of the Portuguese national team took place around 20h, "the last one being the only one that did not take place at the weekend, a more favorable time for group viewing, which may have 'harmed 'the official audience for the debut of the national team, in 2008 and 2012".
The numbers from IPG Mediabrands reflect only official audiences, not including the out-of-home viewing typical of this type of game.
