Multiservice Provisioning Platform: Enabling Convergence in Telecommunications

Multiservice provision refers to the capability of a single network or service provider to offer multiple communication services to customers through an integrated platform. These services can include traditional telephony, broadband internet access, IP telephony or voice over internet protocol (VoIP), digital television or IPTV, and mobile communications all through a unified infrastructure and interface. By supporting the simultaneous delivery of diverse services, multiservice networks aim to enhance customer convenience while improving infrastructure utilization and operational efficiencies for providers.

Technological Advancements Driving Convergence

Several advances in networking technologies have laid the foundation for Multiservice Provisioning Platform models. The evolution of broadband access networks like cable, digital subscriber line (DSL) and fiber optic lines allows sufficient bandwidth for integrated delivery of data, voice and video. Meanwhile, the emergence of Internet Protocol (IP) as the common transport and switching protocol for both legacy and newgeneration services has facilitated their convergence on single platforms. IP's packet-switched architecture enables dynamic allocation of bandwidth as required, unlike traditional circuit-switched networks with fixed bandwidth channels.

Additionally, the proliferation of all-IP networks transitioning legacy services to VoIP and the rapid adoption of wireless technologies for both fixed and mobile access have accelerated convergence. Wireless networks now act as key access links for fixed-mobile convergence based on uniform IP connectivity. Advances in compression standards like MPEG4 for digital video also improve broadband networks' ability to deliver enhanced multimedia services. Overall, these pervasive IP-based infrastructures establish the basic connectivity needed for bundled, integrated service offerings.

Multiservice Provisioning Platform and the Customer Experience

From a customer perspective, multiservice provision promises more choice, value and convenience. Subscribing to several stand-alone data, telephony and television services involves multiple providers, bills and points of contact for issues. Consolidating access to all major communications needs through a single integrated package removes these hassles. Users need only deal with one service relationship, invoice and customer care interface for all services on a single account.

This consolidated billing and support experience enhances convenience, while offering potential cost savings through bundled package discounts. Customers gain access to a broader array of service combinations tailored to their specific needs like data-heavy plans with basic telephony and small television packages. Operators too benefit through higher customer retention and cross-selling opportunities across service portfolios as customers consolidate usage with their provider.
