1. Get that Body Moving

When you engage in movement, whether it's gentle stretching, walking, or yoga, your body releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins act as natural pain relievers, helping you reduce discomfort and improve your mood during menstruation.

Movement increases blood flow throughout your body, relaxes your muscles and reduces leg pain. So, get out of that bed and get your butt moving.

 

2. Stretch the Stress Out

How does that first-morning stretch feel? Relaxing! Rejuvenating! Rewiring!

Similarly, these stretches listed below will make you feel much, much, much better from that tightening leg pain, low energy, and mood swings.

·        The Stretchy Flamingo: Stand tall like a flamingo and gently bend one knee behind you, grab your foot with your hand or use a towel to get hold of your leg. Hold for a few seconds, then switch sides. This stretch helps release tension in the quads and hamstrings and thereby relaxes the whole leg.

·         The Twisting Tree: Sit cross-legged on the floor and gently twist your upper body to one side, placing one hand on the opposite knee and the other behind you for support. Hold for a couple of breaths, then switch sides. This twist helps relieve tension in the lower back, hips, and whole legs.

·         Butterfly Stretch: Sit on the floor with the soles of your feet together and your knees bent out to the sides. Hold onto your ankles or feet with your hands. Gently press your knees down towards the floor while keeping your back straight.

·         Downward Dog: Start on your hands and knees with your wrists directly under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Lift your hips towards the ceiling, straightening your arms and legs to form an upside-down V shape.

·         Word of advice: Begin with gentle stretching exercises and gradually increase the intensity as you feel comfortable. Listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard, especially if you're experiencing significant pain or discomfort. 

 

3. Comfort yourself with Heat Therapy

·        Hot Water Bottle Hug: Embrace the warmth of a hot water bottle or heating pad against your achy legs. Simply place it on the affected area for 10-15 minutes to help relax tense muscles and soothe discomfort.

·         DIY Leg Wrap: Wrap a towel around a hot water bottle and secure it with a rubber band to create a makeshift leg wrap. Apply gentle pressure to the affected area for pain relief.

·         Hot Water Dip: Take a warm and relaxing bath with some Epsom salts to ease muscle tension and soothe achy legs. The magnesium in Epsom salts can help relax muscles and reduce pain, making bath time a calming ritual for relief.

 

4. Nutrition for Relief

·        Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water can help flush out toxins, reduce bloating, and reduce leg pain during periods. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and keep those legs happy.

Add in some teas, water infusions or smoothies to level up your hydration.

·         Eat Healthy: Incorporate foods rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium into your diet to help relax muscles and reduce leg pain. Think bananas, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and dairy products for some relief. Try to add more colours to your plate and strictly stick to “ghar ka khana”.

 

5. Pamper Yourself

·        Massage Therapy: Treat yourself to a relaxing leg massage using some soothing essential oils or a massage roller. The gentle pressure and soothing scents can help relax tense muscles and ease leg pain during periods.
