Applications of PEI in Water Treatment

One of the major applications of PEI is in water treatment processes. PEI works as a flocculating agent to remove suspended solids, metals, and other pollutants from water. The cationic charges on PEI allow it to interact electrostatically with negatively charged particles present in wastewater. This leads to aggregation and sedimentation of impurities which can then be removed through simple filtration. PEI is commonly used for treatment of mining wastewater, landfill leachate, and industrial effluents. It reduces chemical oxygen demand and turbidity levels, helping to purify water sufficiently for disposal or reuse.

Role of PEI in Gene Delivery and Transfection

Polyethyleneimine is widely employed as a gene delivery vector for transfection purposes. It condenses and compacts DNA/RNA molecules through electrostatic interaction between the cationic polymer and anionic nucleic acids. This leads to the formation of stable nanosized polyplexes suitable for intracellular delivery of genetic material. The polyplexes can then escape from endosomes through the “proton sponge effect” and release their payload in the cytosol. The primary, secondary and tertiary amines in PEI structure act as a buffer, pumping protons into endosomes. This causes endosomal rupture and releases the polyplexes into the cytoplasm before they are degraded in lysosomes. Once in the cytosol, the genetic material can be transported to the nucleus and expressed. Branched PEI with molecular weight around 25 kDa is commonly used as it provides high transfection efficiency for a wide range of cell lines in vitro.

Use of PEI in Catalysis and Chemical Separations

The multiple amine groups makes PEI an excellent ligand for coordination with metal ions. This property is exploited in applications like catalysis, gas separations, and heavy metal recovery. For example, PEI-metal complexes are used as homogeneous catalysts for various oxidations, reductions, and other organic transformations. PEI functionalized membranes can separate carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gases from natural gas streams based on differential sorption into the amine containing polymer matrix.
Polycationic PEI is also effective for removal and recovery of toxic heavy metals like chromium, cadmium, mercury from industrial wastewater through complexation. The PEI-metal complexes precipitate out and are easily separated. This helps meet stringent environmental regulations on discharge of heavy metals.
