Bridge Team Management (BTM)

Subject Areas

This course is designed in line with the IMO Model Course 1.22, Ship Simulator, and Bridge Teamwork, and satisfies the STCW requirements in Navigation at Management Level (STCW A-II/2). The BTM course covers all aspects of ship handling, passage planning, collision avoidance regulations, bridge teamwork and management, and control of navigational errors.

Course Content:

Familiarization: Mastering the principles of effective bridge team management.
Passage Planning: Developing routes and waypoints, detailed planning strategies.
Bridge Procedures: Understanding the bridge team concept, creating functional bridge teams, utilizing checklists, and maintaining logs.
Ship Handling: Utilizing maneuvering data, understanding vessel hydrodynamics, managing engine controls, handling anchors, and navigating in restricted visibility and heavy weather conditions.
Watch-Keeping Conditions: Augmenting watch schedules, managing changes, and overseeing work and rest periods.
Effective Communications: Ensuring accurate information exchange among bridge team members.
Integration of Pilot into Bridge Team: Seamlessly incorporating the pilot into the bridge team operations.
Situational Awareness: Identifying and mitigating errors, reassessing priorities, allocating resources efficiently, and using bridge systems and equipment effectively.
Leadership: Upholding bridge discipline, ensuring vigilance, and positioning and supervising watch-keeping personnel.
Response to Bridge Emergencies: Managing failures of critical components in integrated navigation systems and addressing the incapacity of bridge team members.
