The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect international travel. No travel is risk-free and many countries have closed their borders or restricted the entry of passengers into the UK. Each country can further restrict travel or introduce new rules at short notice, for example because of a new version of COVID-19.

Before deciding to travel overseas, read the instructions for your personal circumstances. When traveling abroad, even if you return to places you've been before, follow this checklist:

1. Before you travel

  • Follow current COVID-19 rules for where you live in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Subscribe to email travel notifications for your destination and the countries you will be traveling to. So you'll know when we update our tips with new and important information
  • Check our travel tips for entry, testing or quarantine restrictions, or contact the UK-based embassy for your destination country
  • If you need a negative COVID-19 test to enter a country, you will need to use a private test provider. The NHS test and tracing service was unable to provide the required documents
  • If you live in the UK and have the full vaccination (2 doses) you can prove your vaccination status against COVID-19 with an application or entry letter to certain countries and territories. Read the entry requirements for travel advice to find out if the country you plan to travel to accepts proof of this vaccination status
  • Find out about your rights and obligations before, during and after traveling on a COVID-19 travel charter

  • You must wear a face covering when flying to England and Scotland
  • Read the guide from the National Health Network for Travel and Centers (NaTHNaC)
  • Ask your accommodation provider about COVID-19 safety precautions
  • Read advice from local authorities and follow local health requirements during your trip and destination. Local and international travel restrictions may change before or during your stay
  • Get travel insurance with adequate coverage
  • Check your withdrawal rights. If you have any questions, contact your tour operator, transportation and accommodation provider
  • Use a step-by-step guide abroad to make sure you are fully prepared

2. When you are abroad

  • Stay up-to-date with all travel tip updates as there may be changes to your travel destination
  • Be prepared to comply with changing restrictions for local COVID-19 outbreak management such as: B.Border closure requirements, traffic restrictions, testing and quarantine
  • If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to seek care where you are and stay until you recover. If you are quarantined by local authorities, please do so wherever you are
  • Travel restrictions may unexpectedly delay your return home. Plan for possible delays. Make sure you have access to money and take practical steps to stay away longer than planned
  • If there are delays, you will need to contact your travel company or airline for changes to the transportation schedule
  • Read our instructions if you are unable to return to the UK due to COVID-19

3. Prepare to return to England

Before entering the UK you must:

  • Test for COVID-19 up to 3 days before departure. You must show a negative test result when you arrive in the UK, including when you return home. Read more test information for traveling to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland from abroad
  • Complete your passenger location form up to 48 hours before entering the UK
  • if you are returning to the UK from:
  • If a country is on the red list or you have passed it in the last 10 days, you must book to stay at a quarantine managed hotel
  • A country on the Yellow List, or if you have passed it in the past 10 days, you must order a COVID test according to the quarantine rules to arrive in the UK
  • Landing on the green list, you have to order the 2nd day of the COVID test
  • When you return to Scotland, look for the red, yellow and green lists for Scotland
  • If you return to Wales, check out the rules for traveling abroad to Wales, including the countries on the red, yellow and green lists

This rule does not apply to travel within the general travel area, including Ireland.

Different conditions apply when arriving in Northern Ireland.

4. When you arrive in England

  • Unless excluded, follow the rules for the country or countries you are visiting when entering the UK from abroad.
  • If you come to the UK from a country that is on the Yellow List, you may be able to pay for a COVID-19 test in a release test to see if you can reduce your self-isolation time.
