Uses of Nifedipine
Nifedipine is a medication that is primarily used for the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure. Due to its vasodilatory effects, it helps relax the blood vessels and decrease the resistance to blood flow, which in turn lowers blood pressure. Nifedipine is available in both immediate-release and extended-release forms. The immediate-release form is used for emergency treatment of hypertension, while the extended-release form is used as a long-term treatment option. Apart from hypertension, nifedipine is also prescribed for treatment of angina or chest pain and related cardiovascular disorders.

Mechanism of Action
Nifedipine Medication belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It works by blocking the calcium channels present in the muscle cells of artery walls. Calcium is essential for contraction of smooth muscle cells present in arteries. When calcium entry is blocked by nifedipine, the arterial muscles relax and blood vessels dilate. This results in decreased peripheral vascular resistance and reduced blood pressure. Nifedipine blocks both slow calcium channels involved in muscle contraction as well as fast calcium channels involved in regulating heart rate.
