Heated jackets are great clothing options for those looking to stay warm in cold weather. Whether you work outdoors, are into winter sports, or just want a less busy option for staying warm, the heated jacket may be the perfect answer. But how long does a heated jacket actually last? The answer depends largely on the intended use, whether you use it every day or just during the winter. So let’s look at what the expected lifespan of a heated jacket is and whether it would be a worthwhile investment for you.

Everyday Regular Use

If you use your heated jacket every day, it’s going to see a lot of wear. On average, a well-made heated jacket can last about two to three years with daily use. This includes the battery, heating elements, and the jacket itself. Of course, this is an average and the actual lifespan of your specific jacket can vary based on the brand and how you take care of it. Washing the jacket according to the care instructions is important for longevity. Always remove the battery before washing and avoid using harsh detergents. Spot cleaning and gentle hand washing can help extend its life too. Regularly check for signs of wear like frayed wires or loose connections and fix them before they become bigger issues that can’t be fixed.

Winter-Only Use

If you only use your heated jacket during the winter, it typically can last for much longer. A heated jacket used only seasonally can last two to three times as long as with daily wear, or up to five years or more. Since you’re using it less frequently, the battery and heating elements aren’t working as hard which means less stress and wear on the jacket. Even with seasonal-only use, it is important to take good care of your jacket if you want it to last as many years as possible. This means storing it properly when you're not using it, making sure it’s clean and dry before putting it away, and storing the battery in a cool, dry place. You may want to check on the battery every few months just to make sure it can still hold a charge. And all during the cold months, strive to keep the jacket clean and functioning just as if you used it every day.

Is It Time for a New Jacket?

Even with the best care, a heated jacket is going to wear out eventually and need replacing. This may look like a battery that doesn’t hold a charge, frayed wires, damage to the heating elements, or ineffective warming. Be on the lookout for these signs as your jacket gets older so that you know when it is time to replace it so that you can continue to enjoy all the benefits of heated jackets and stay warm for many seasons to come.
