A lot has changed in the world of electric bicycles since I joined in 2016. Motors and batteries are becoming smaller, lighter and more integrated, so that some e-bikes can hardly be distinguished from normal bicycles. There is also more choice than ever, and lower prices have made electric bikes easier to access. In this 2021 buying guide, I will cover the basics so you can make the right decision.

I am sure most readers will know what an electric bike is, but for those who are new to the e-bike world, I will cover the basics.

What is an electric bike (and how do they work?)

An electric bike (also known as an e-bike or a pedalec) is a bike with a small electric motor and battery that help the rider pedal. For me, the e-bike is one of the best inventions of the 21st century as it enables people of all ages and all abilities to start cycling again.

I live in a very hilly, rural part of Cornwall in the south west of England and cycling in my area can be incredibly challenging if you are not reasonably fit. I have seen an explosion in the use of electric bikes in my area and it is great to see so many people cycling and enjoying the scenery.

In recent years, the prices of new electric bicycles have dropped significantly, making them much more accessible for everyone.

Choosing the right electric bike

If you are new to the world of e-bikes, it can be a bit overwhelming with the choices currently available. Types of electric bikes cover the full spectrum of bike styles, from racing bikes to mountain bikes to recumbent bikes.

For example, to add to the confusion, there are sub-categories for each type of e-bike: a hybrid bike used to be a mix of mountain bike and racing bike, but now there are trekking hybrids, urban hybrids and sport hybrids, and so on continue...

Another consideration is the type of frame you will need. If you are having trouble getting your leg over a regular bike frame, consider an entry-level electric bike. These types of bikes have a reinforced down tube and no top tube, which makes getting in and out of the bike easier.

Step-thru e-bikes are great because anyone, regardless of age or gender, can use them. They are especially popular in European cities.

When electric bikes first became available, many said they were a fad. The last few years have shown that they will definitely stay here.
