Lee Seung-yup “Ace-like crisis management ability, 100% role”
The ace's fingertips shone.
The Doosan Bears were all smiles after a 6-1 home win over the KT Wiz in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on Tuesday. The Bears won their second straight game and completed the sweep.
The starting lineup was Henry Ramos (right fielder), Jung Soo-bin (center fielder), Yang Ji (catcher), Kim Jae-hwan (designated hitter), Yang Seok-hwan (first baseman), Kang Seung-ho (second baseman), Jeon Min-jae (shortstop), Lee Yoo-chan (third baseman), and Cho Sung-hyun (left fielder). Kwak Bin was the starting pitcher.
Kwak Bin earned the win with six innings of two-hit ball, three walks and five strikeouts. His total pitch count was 80 (51 strikes). In his last start, on April 24 against the Gwangju Kia Tigers, he threw 110 pitches while striking out eight in seven innings of no-hit ball, so he may have adjusted his pitch count for this game.
He threw a mix of fastballs (38), curveballs (17), sliders (16) and changeups (9). His fastball topped out at 153 km/h. He posted his eighth quality start of the season (6+ innings of 3 earned runs or less - QS) and improved to 5-0 on the season. He lowered his ERA from 3.50 to 3.20.
He was followed by Park Chi-guk with ⅔ scoreless innings, Kim Myung-shin with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Lee Young-ha with 1 scoreless inning.
At the plate, Yang led the way with two hits (one home run) and three RBIs in four at-bats. He hit a two-run home run to left field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ramos was 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Yoo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Jung Soo-bin, who finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, became the 55th player in KBO history to reach 1,600 career 스포츠토토 games played.
After the game, manager Lee Seung-yeop said, “Starting pitcher Kwak-bin did his job 100% this time by going a long inning without giving up a run. He showed his ace-like crisis management ability by not allowing an earned run despite being in a bases-loaded situation early in the game.” ‘He didn't get a personal victory despite his best pitching in the previous game against KIA, but I think he can make up for it today (30th),’ Lee applauded.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the third inning, Kwak-Bin put runners on first and second after Mel Rojas Jr. singled to left, Chun Sung-ho grounded out to second and stole second, and Kang Baek-ho walked. Moon Sang-chul then induced a grounder to third base, but Lee Yoo-chan's throwing error allowed the tying run to score. In the clutch, Kwak Bin struck out Oh Jae-il on a wild pitch.
“Catcher Yang Ji-jo also kept Kwak-bin steady and took the pressure off the starting pitcher with a leadoff single in the fourth inning,” Lee said. Then Ramos hit a home run in the fifth inning to swing the momentum in our favor. I want to praise Ramos for leading the offense from the top of the order for the second day in a row,” said Kwak.
“Our fans filled the first-base bleachers for a midweek game, and their support translated into a winning series. We're always grateful for that.”
