At some point, you may find that your loved one is no longer able to stay at home on their own. It may be dangerous for them to be on their own for a long period of time or they need too much help with daily tasks and their medical care that it no longer makes sense for them to stay at home on their own. When this happens, they and their family members may decide that it is time for them to go to a nursing home or a skilled nursing facility. But what is a skilled nursing facility and how can it help you along the way.

When it  comes to the long-term care community, the terms nursing home and skilled nursing facility are going to mean the same thing. You are able to use them interchangeably if you choose. In addition to skilled nursing, nursing homes are able to provide some personal care and rehabilitation to the patient. Some of the terms to know when looking into your options include:

# Skilled nursing: This can include things like managing your insulin pump, wound care, or any of the other services that a registered nurse is going to need to help out with and supervise along the way.

# Rehabilitation: This is going to be a useful one to have if the individual will be able to use if there is a disability, disease, or injury that makes it hard for them to move and do other things. It is possible that the individual will be able to get help with speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy when they choose to do these services.

# Long-term care; This is going to be all of the care and services that are not available to the community but they are necessary to help the individual with their physical and mental condition. It can include things like dementia care, skilled nursing, and help with some of the activities of daily living too.
