Esophageal cancer is cancer that occurs in the esophagus (a long, hollow tube that runs from your throat to your stomach, also called the esophagus or esophagus). The esophagus that you eat carries it to the stomach for digestion.

Cancer of the esophagus usually begins in cells that are inside the esophagus. Cancer of the esophagus can occur anywhere in the esophagus. Men have more cancer of the esophagus than women.

In many regions of the world, such as parts of Asia and Africa, canal cancer is very common.

There are known factors that play a major role in increasing the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This includes alcohol consumption, smoking, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett's esophagus, overweight or obesity, not consuming enough fruits and vegetables, etc.

Common symptoms of esophageal cancer

The possibility of canal cancer is more in those who have recurrent infections in the throat.

Cancer may be possible if there is trouble swallowing.

Chest pain or burning is also a symptom of canal cancer.

Frequent cough problems or throat sounds also increase the chances of cancer of the food pipe.

Who can get canal cancer?

Alcohol consumption can be the main cause of canal cancer.

Cancer can also be caused if the acid reflux problem persists.

Drinking too much hot water or fluids also increases the chances of cancer in the food pipe.

Smokers can also have cancer of the esophagus.

The cause of esophageal cancer

Like other types of cancer, the cause of the esophagus is still unknown. However, there are known factors that play a major role in increasing the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This includes alcohol consumption, smoking, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett's esophagus, overweight or obesity, not consuming enough fruits and vegetables, etc.

With the increasing stages of cancer in the esophagus, the likelihood of some complications increases, including severe pain, esophageal bleeding, obstruction of the esophagus, or difficulty in swallowing food and liquid.

Prevention of esophageal cancer

Although there is no sure way to prevent pharyngeal cancer. Nevertheless, by adopting some preventive methods, a person can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer. To reduce the risk of cancer, do not smoke, avoid tobacco consumption, exercise regularly, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, consume plenty of fruits and vegetables and maintain a healthy weight.

The following are the stages of cancer in the esophagus

Stage 0 - Cancer does not develop at this stage, only abnormal cells are found.

Stage I - Cancer in this stage is limited only to the cells found in the lining of the alimentary canal.

Stage II- In this stage, the tumor cells have spread to the outer wall of the alimentary canal. In addition, the cancer can spread to 1 to 2 lymph nodes nearby.

Stage III - This stage means that the cancer has spread deep into the inner muscle layer or connective tissue wall. And this cancer can spread to the organs around the esophagus or most of the nearby lymph nodes.

IV Stage - This is the most developed and advanced stage of cancer. This means that cancer has spread to other organs in the body or away from the alimentary canal to the lymph nodes.

Cancer test in the esophagus

Endoscopy

In endoscopy, doctors test a thin flexible tube in your throat, next to which the camera endoscope is inserted into your throat.

Biopsy

In a biopsy, your doctor will use a surgery, endoscope or needle to remove a tissue from your throat and test for cancer.

Imaging test

X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and stomach scans can show whether cancer has reached beyond your throat to other parts of your body.

Types of cancer in the esophagus

Food pipe cancer is classified based on the type of cells. There are two main types of cancer in the esophagus:

Squamous cell carcinoma - A type of esophageal cancer of squamous cell carcinoma, begins in flat, thin cells forming the lining of the esophagus (esophagus). This type of cancer is most visible in the upper or middle part of the esophagus.

Adenocarcinoma - When cancer starts in the cells of the glands that produce mucous-like fluid in the esophagus, it is a type of cancer called adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma most commonly affects the lower part of the esophagus.

Other rare types - Other rare types of esophageal cancer may include Small cell carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma, melanoma, and choriocarcinoma.

What is the treatment for throat cancer?

Surgery

If the cancer of the alimentary canal is small and not spreading, the doctor may remove the tumor using an endoscope and minimally invasive surgery. In severe cases, it is also possible to remove the upper part of the abdomen during surgery. Laparoscopic surgery cuts the food pipe where the cancer cells are, and cuts the stomach to the throat.

Chemotherapy

Under chemotherapy, cancer cells are destroyed using certain drugs. Chemotherapy may be recommended before or after surgery. Sometimes chemotherapy can also be used with radiation therapy. Some possible side effects may occur under chemotherapy, including:

  • Hair fall
  • Nausea
  • Vomit
  • Feeling tired, etc.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses a beam of radiation to kill cancer cells. Radiation may be given externally or internally to treat cancer. Internal radiation therapy is called brachytherapy. Radiation therapy is commonly used as well as chemotherapy. After radiation therapy, a person may feel the following side effects, such as:

  • Sunburn
  • Experiencing pain or difficulty swallowing
  • Feeling tired
  • Painful ulcers in the lining of the food pipe, etc.
