While an economic assignment helps us understand the economic divide, in theory, the Corona crisis has uncovered the bleak reality of human society. The pandemic has wrought death and devastation all around and is slowly revealing the flaws in our systems.

The highly contagious nature of the disease makes it impossible to carry out traditional learning methods. As a result, the education sector is undergoing a major transition as institutions around the world adapt to online teaching methods. Teachers and professors are administering their lectures via digital means. With the quarantine seeing no end to it, many schools and universities have even decided to carry out assignments and assessments remotely.

Economic assignments have helped us realise that disparate wealth distribution and educational inequality is a bitter truth of every country. Read on to know more about the plight of the students who are too poor to afford online learning.

Why is online learning impossible for many?

Amid the chaos, the pandemic has shed light on some uncomfortable truths about world education and human society as a whole.

The quarantine has brought the socio-economic division amongst the human population to the fore. It unveiled the educational, technological and financial disparity prevalent across all countries.

With inequality and poverty an undeniable reality, it should come as no surprise that many financially challenged students are unable to continue with their studies right now.

Four billion people around the world can’t afford the Internet. Expensive access and lack of knowledge are the primary reasons behind such a scenario.

What’s more surprising is that even in developed countries like the United States of America, government surveys show how thousands of households lack the basic means to go online. Another survey by Microsoft demonstrates how millions of people in remote areas have no access to any web connection whatsoever.

An article on the New York Times sheds light on the disparate impact of the pandemic on the rich & the poor of China.

Students from rural communities and low-income households in developing and third world countries have been hit the hardest.

As the world economy slumps into a recession, the situation might become worse as prices are expected to rise.

Potential remedies to the aid

Many institutions are providing free access to the Internet for those in need.

Some schools and universities are equipping their buses with Wi-Fi hotspots for their students.

Governments are handing out Internet-enabled electronic devices to needy pupils.

Some schools are mailing packets with study instructions for their students.

Many companies are also offering free access to the Internet and other web resources.

Teachers are working with authorities to ensure that online streaming applications such as Zoom and Google Classroom are available to students from every community.

Society’s inequalities can never be eradicated overnight. The current crisis, however, may act as the catalyst that will bring about a drastic change not just in the educational system but in human society as a whole.
