How to maintain ratchet straps for their long-term use?
Maintenance of lifting and height safety equipment is necessary to ensure its longevity and proper use. Below are some ways mentioned to maintain ratchet straps for seamless weight lifting.
● Timely lubrication
It is necessary to lubricate ratchets from time to time using industrial oil or silicone spray. Use lubricant wisely, be careful that lubricant should not be applied to the webbing otherwise dirt and debris will stick to it. Lubricate the ratchet handle or other equipment like hoists, fall arresters, shackles, etc. so that operation will complete with ease without any interruption.
● Removal from handles
The life of the ratchet strap can be increased by following this process. When the strap is not in use then it should be removed from the handle. This will prevent the strap from the tight wrapping around the ratchet or to the teeth of the ratchet. Hence, it will not be exposed to cuts that can occur due to tight wrapping.
● Don't keep straps in the sun
Either strap is made up of polyester or nylon; both fibers are affected by the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The sun UV rays discolor and make the straps brittle therefore they should be kept in a dark place or the exterior toolbox. The faded color of the webbing strap is the first indication of weak strength therefore it should be properly stored.
● Avoid storage of wet straps
Wet straps absorb moisture hence they can be exposed to mildew and mold. These types of bacteria weaken the fiber as a result reduced the strength of the ratchet straps. Always thoroughly dry the strap and then keep them in a safe place. If they are exposed to mold then clean them with friendly material instead of using chlorine.
● Regular inspection
The straps should be inspected before and after every use. The straps can be cut due to the sharp edge or corner of the load. Other equipment like height safety tools i.e, fall arrest system, webbing slings, etc. are also exposed to such damages. Therefore, to safeguard them the load edges should be covered with protectors.
