Pant won the toss and elected to bat first. Delhi Capitals brought in Prithvi Shaw, and the diminutive opener delivered instantly with a blazing knock of 43 (27). At the other end, David Warner was in his element, scoring 52 runs in 35 balls. The two openers posted an opening stand of 93 runs in 9.3 overs.

Delhi then slipped from 93/0 to 134/4 by the 15th over as Pathirana yorked Marsh and Stubbs. Pant had had two scratchy innings earlier but looked much better tonight. He took his time to settle first—he was 23 (23) when the 17th over started—and then exploded spectacularly in the 18th and 19th overs, which yielded a combined 31 runs. Delhi ended with 191.

The DC pacers were on the money straightaway with the new ball. Khaleel had Ruturaj Gaikwad, the CSK skipper, edging to Pant, before bouncing out Rachin Ravindra.

Ajinkya Rahane (45 off 30) was sumptuous in his 5 fours and 2 sixes, but lost Daryl Mitchell at the other end to Axar Patel before himself getting out to Mukesh Kumar, who used his pace variations to get rid of Sameer Rizvi and Shivam Dube. The match was effectively done and dusted when CSK were 120/6 in 16.1 overs, but the best show of the night—the MS Dhoni show—was yet to come.

Dhoni, who didn’t get to bat in the first two CSK matches, pulled his first ball of the season for a four and then got another boundary with a drive. Dhoni smoked Khaleel over extra cover for his first six, before tearing into Nortje in a 20-run last over.

Score summary: Delhi Capitals 191/5 in 20 overs (David Warner 52, Matheesha Pathirana 3/31); Chennai Super Kings 171/6 in 20 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 45, Mukesh Kumar 3/21). DC defeated CSK by 20 wickets.
