After being with the BCG for over three years Abhiraj Bhal returned to India and commenced a movie streaming startup referred to as CinemaBox (a service that helped one watch films on their smartphones while traveling) with Varun Khaitan, his batchmate from IIT-Kanpur who had also worked with the Boston Consulting Group, in the USA.

Varun and Abhiraj met Raghav Chandra, a computer science graduate from the University of California, Berkeley who had formerly worked with corporations like Yelp and Twitter.

Raghav Chandra at that time was working on his auto-rickshaw aggregator which was known as Buggy. in

Within the initial conversation, Abhiraj Bhal & Varun Khaitan dismissed the idea of becoming a member of Raghav Chandra’s buggy.in and Raghav Chandra felt the same towards joining Abhiraj & Varun’s assignment CinemaBox.

So how did Abhiraj Bhal, Varun Khaitan & Raghav Chandra come up with the idea of UrbanClap which is now referred to as Urban Company?

Abhiraj Bhal, Varun, and Raghav soon closed their original startups and finalized home service as a space they would like to enter into. Because the Indian domestic services sector is fragmented and largely unorganized.

Initially, all three started out searching out beauticians, plumbers, photographers as they might then suggest them to pals and families. After which they started out checking out this idea with other employees in their friend’s corporations and browsed Facebook groups proceeding to discover people looking for those service offerings.

They created a website urbanclap.com in 2014 and made its first investment of 4000Rs on Facebook advertising.

Initially, they bootstrapped the company until Accel partners and SAIF companions invested 1.6 million $ in UrbanClap.
