Providing Your References When Moving Into an Apartment
As you fill out the application for a new landlord, you will find that there are quite a few pieces of documentation you need to have on hand to help prove that you will be a good tenant for the landlord. This helps you get off on the right foot for the new rental and is so important when you get ready to move. For example, you will need things like:
# Your pay stub shows how much you make and that it is at least 3 times the rent.
# The past two months of bank statements to show your finances will be enough to cover fees
# Rental history to show that you have been a good tenant in the past
# An ID of some sort to prove who you are.
It is also possible that your potential landlord or property manager is going to ask you for some references to show that you have been a good tenant in the past. Since you already filled out the rental history with some of your previous landlords, you should ask someone else to write the reference letter. Having a combination of personal and professional references will make a big difference to show that you are responsible and will keep up on the rent.
Before you write someone down as one of your references, you need to ask them if they are fine with this. You do not want to have them surprised later because they were not expecting it. And it gives someone a chance to say no if they are likely to give you a bad reference that could harm your chances of getting into an apartment.
If you have never rented an apartment in the past, then it is really important that you take the time to provide references from employers, family members, and others to show how responsible you are and to give some reasons why the landlord needs to consider renting to you. You don’t have the rental history to show how good of a renter you are.
