One thing that students commonly cite as a cause of stress is examinations. Both exam anxiety and exam fear are two things common among students of every age group. But some students are able to handle both these things in their own way.

Those students who get subjected to exam stress fall into depression, perform poorly in exams which makes them take extreme measures. Sometimes, exam pressure can also cause panic attacks.

A lot of students find that the stress they face when the exams are around the corner is much worse than the examination itself and the situation turns out to be worse for those students who have an elder brother or sister who has already performed well, so they feel like they've to be equal to their standards.

Effective Tips to Overcome Exam Anxiety

  • Keep your level of stress to a minimum and try out ways to relax yourself. Remember that no one can be perfect and all you have to do, is to do your best.

  • Create a revision time table and include the subjects and topics that you will study each day. Also, you need to start revising early-when you give yourself enough time for thorough revision, you feel much more confident, write your exams well, thereby keeping anxiety at bay. Revision is not something that you should leave for the last minute.

  • The most effective way to study is typically in short periods, and prepare your revision timetable in such a way that you allot some time for relaxation as well.

  • Make revision much easier, through focusing on most important topics, which you need to cover and prepare notes of any area you don't understand, or are unsure of and clear it either with a teacher or your friend. You need to talk over the course with your friends and also give moral support to each other.

  • Set out sufficient time for revision well ahead of the exam- about 6 weeks is sufficient, but take more time if you feel as though you may need it.

  • Ensure that you do your revision properly. Concentrate on important materials and try to be active instead of sitting and reading for hours at a time.

  • When you get stuck during revision, then seek the help of your class tutor or lecturer.

  • You can even take the help of any online tutoring platforms if you need an additional support with your lessons.

  • Students typically have a habit of comparing themselves with others. Before exams, they tend to enquire about the progress of their friends, how much they have prepared and count on the hours that they've studied so far. This must be avoided, since it leads to anxiety and stress. Rather you need to concentrate on preparation and make the most of your time.

  • Ensure that you spend some time on various activities to get rid of stress from your body, such as walking, exercise, dancing, swimming, cycling, and aerobics.

  • Make sure that you get fresh air every day, which helps you feel better- spending some time in the garden, a ten-minute walk around the block or in the park proves to be beneficial.

  • Certain students may find it more interesting to learn when they set study time hours prior to their favourite TV programme which they love watching- this helps them know that after a few hours of study you have something to enjoy.

  • During break time, never think about your exams and works- indulge in whatever you enjoy the most and what makes you feel relaxed- such as listening to music, hanging out with friends etc. This way you feel more motivated to resume your revision after break time.

  • Normally during exam time, most of the students often neglect their eating habits. Always have a balanced diet, and ensure that you don't skip breakfast since you may be out of energy and feel restless and won't be in the mood to study. You can only focus properly when you're mentally and physically great.

  • If you're not able to focus, then take a break for a while and then resume your studies.

  • You should not go to sleep soon after you're done with revision- you require relaxation right before the end of the day. A relaxing bath just before going to sleep, or sleeping at a reasonable time can help, so that you won't feel tired the very next day.

  • Adequate sleep will help you to not just relax, but also to focus and concentrate better. You should refrain from staying awake all night. You need to take proper rest at night since it will give rest to your brain and eyes. At least seven to eight hours of sleep is required to cope up with exam anxiety.

  • Never leave out revision for the last hours.

  • Staying optimistic is essential in all walks of your life. When the exams are around the corner, it's essential to remain positive. You must be confident of yourself and positively believe that you will perform well. To stay positive, you can practice some meditation and breathing exercises as well.

  • The night prior to the day of the exam, make sure that you've everything you need for the exam, such as pens, pencils, scales, etc.

  • On your exam day, wake up early so that at your own pace, you can take things- never panic or rush about being late.

  • Before you start writing down the answers, go through the question paper completely so that it gives you an idea of the amount of time that you require for each question asked.

  • Never panic, if you cannot answer a question. Write down the answers for those questions you feel much confident and sure about, and later on, come back to attempt the difficult questions.

  • When you're getting panicky or stressed, then slow down your breathing and take some deep breaths, and you begin to feel more relaxed.

Sometimes anxiety can become very severe that they can interfere into your day-to-day life as well. Therefore if you find out that you're experiencing anxiety on a regular basis, then never restrain from asking out for help.
