Why did Tudor use the rose motif as a logo in the middle of its history and then abandoned it?

Rolex and Tudor are family, we all know that. However, compared to Rolex's legendary naming, Tudor's naming is relatively "ordinary".TUDOR Black Bay M7941A1A0RU-0003 So why would Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, after having his first watch brand, want to create a Tudor with a similar secondary status?

According to the brand itself, it was because Hans Wilsdorf wanted to expand his relationships with a wider market.TUDOR Ranger M79950-0001 Even though Rolex was relatively affordable compared to other premium brands, it still required a certain budget to purchase, so there was a more entry-level price-band market to tap into. Thus, in 1946, Wilsdorf created the new brand TUDOR.

Why "TUDOR"? In fact, the term has a direct origin. It originated from the famous House of Tudor in England in the 15th and 16th centuries. This dynasty, if compared to Chinese history, is somewhat like the Tang Dynasty's "Rule of Zhen Guan", in short, it was a highly regarded period of prosperity in history. For Rolex, which incorporated in the UK in the early 1900s, there was a pedigree to finding a name that would be universally recognized by the British. Even by the 1940s, when Rolex's headquarters had moved to Switzerland, Hans Wilsdorf looked first to his British background for inspiration when naming his new brand.

The Tudor brand logo has evolved many times. Prior to the 1960s, the brand chose to use well-known allusions to the Wars of the Roses as inspiration for the design of its logo, taking into account the royal culture of the Tudor dynasty. At the time, the two great Tudor families fighting for the throne used the red rose and the white rose as the emblems of the House of Lancaster and the House of York respectively. As a result, between 1940 and 1960, the TUDOR logo featured a rose to symbolize the Tudor dynasty. The rose motif first appeared on the dials of certain Rolex models around 1936, when it was wrapped in a shield-shaped silhouette, symbolizing a combination of strength and beauty. Later, around 1969, Tudor gradually stopped putting the rose graphic on, leaving only the shield motif, forming the general impression we have of the Tudor Logo today.

Because the early demarcation between Rolex and Tudor was not clear, and because the design of the models was so similar to that of Rolex, it was inevitable that the early Tudor lived in the shadow of its big brother. As a result, TUDOR designed a new hand in 1969: the snowflake hand. Although the early models still looked and designed very similar to Rolex, the newly designed snowflake hand gave a refreshing new look.

With the introduction of the Snowflake Hands watch, it represented an important step for TUDOR as an independent brand. With the release of the new watch came TUDOR's exclusive hand and scale design and a new shield logo (replacing the original rose logo). All these design differences gave the brand a new identity and marked the true separation of TUDOR from Rolex.

It also set the stage for TUDOR's subsequent independence. Today, TUDOR has introduced the Kaijun Beyoncé sports watches, which are designed so that there is not a hint of Rolex to be seen.

In the early days, watch fans used to call TUDOR by its phonetic name "Tiuduo", and it was not until later that the brand was officially named "Tudor", which is both elegant and echoes the original meaning of the name.

Regarding the Tudor brand, our domestic watch friends used to have a very wild name - "Diao Tuo". Now we generally call TUDOR "Tudor", why is there such a big change? It turns out that is TUDOR early Chinese phonetic translation, although pronounced catchy, but because the brand official feel that such a translation of the name sounds loss of Swiss high-class watch brand of elegance and connotation, so it is said to be at the end of the 1980s, TUDOR formally changed the Chinese name to "Tudor", which retains the pronunciation of the harmonic, and at the same time the name has a "Diao Tuo". At the same time the name has a "emperor" character sounds also very powerful, just also with the naming of the brand Tudor dynasty has articulated. As a result, people are now accustomed to calling TUDOR "Tudor" over time, but the term "Tudor" has become a bit strange to the younger generation of watch fans.
