Cyber Security Course: What is a firewall? | Intellipaat
A firewall is a network security device that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. A firewall typically establishes a barrier between a trusted network and an untrusted network, such as the Internet.
There are two main types of firewalls:
- Packet filtering firewalls: These firewalls examine each packet of data that enters or leaves the network and decide whether to allow or block it based on a set of rules.
- Stateful inspection firewalls: These firewalls not only examine each packet but also keep track of the state of each connection. This allows them to block packets that are part of an unauthorized connection, even if the packets themselves do not appear to be malicious.

Firewalls can be used to protect a variety of networks, including home networks, corporate networks, and government networks. They are an essential part of any network security strategy.
Here are some examples of how firewalls can be used:
- A home user might use a firewall to protect their computer from malware and other threats that they might encounter while browsing the internet.
- A corporate network might use a firewall to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the network or to prevent sensitive data from being leaked to the outside world.
- A government network might use a firewall to protect classified information from being accessed by unauthorized users.
Firewalls are not a foolproof security measure, but they are an important part of any network security strategy. By carefully configuring a firewall and keeping it up to date, you can help to protect your network from a variety of threats.
