There is a correct method for storing your wine and an incorrect method. Wine is a lot more delicate than you may believe. Sure, you go to a wine tasting and slosh the liquid around the glass before you take a sip but when the wine is in the bottle the taste can change if something goes wrong. To keep your wine tasting excellent and have the best chances of the desired result; proper wine storage is a must. Here are some things to keep in mind when storing your wine.

Temperature

Temperature changes can have the biggest impact on the taste of the wine. When the temperature is correct, the wine can maintain for almost an unlimited amount of time before you drink it. If the wine is exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures, or the temperature consistently fluctuates, you will not be pleased with the results. When the temperature is too high, the wine is cooked. If the wine is left in a warmer temperature it caused it to age very rapidly and does not have a good result. Keeping the wine in a cooler temperature, between fifty-two-and fifty-eight degrees Fahrenheit, is the best plan of action. By keeping the wine at the desired range, you have a higher chance of achieving the desired results.

Light and Sun Exposure

You do not want the wine exposed to the sun for an extended amount of time. A healthy amount of sunlight may be required for grapes that have not been picked from vines yet but UV light can cause faults in the wine after it is bottled and result in premature aging and cause labels to fade. For this reason, it is important to store your wine in a location that has limited exposure to the sun.

Storage Space

Another key element to planning the storage of your wine is the location. Not everyone has access to a temperature-controlled environment or wine cooler for storage. You can put your wine in a cupboard located outside of the kitchen. If the basement does not have mold or excess dampness, you can also store the wine in the basement. Garages, attics, the top of the fridge, and above the washing machine are not ideal for storing wine. The only time you should keep wine stored in the kitchen is if you spend the money on a wine fridge. It is also recommended for wine to be stored on its side to maintain the cork of the bottle and prevent oxidation.

Humidity

Humidity is also a critical factor when determining the storage of your wine. The humidity of the environment has a large impact on the quality of the cork. If there is not enough moisture in the air of the environment, you are using for storage the cork can dry out and cause the wine to become oxidized. If you are worried about the level of moisture in the area you can place a little bowl with water in it inside the cupboard or put a humidifier in your storage room.
