Heisman college championship and Super B
Joe Burrow Larry Fitzgerald Jersey is on the precipice of history. The second-year quarterback has the Bengals playing in their first Super Bowl since the 1988 season, with a chance to give Cincinnati its first title in franchise history. A win in Super Bowl 56 over the Rams would also make Burrow one of the most accomplished players in college football and NFL history in just his second season in the league. If Burrow is able to lead the Bengals to the NFL's ultimate prize, he would achieve a tremendous quarterback triple crown: national champion, Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl champion. And he would achieve all of that in a two-year span.Burrow achieved the first two of those accomplishments in 2019, a season in which he not only won the Heisman Trophy but also led LSU to a 15-0 record and a win in the 2020 College Football Playoff championship game. It's on the short list of greatest college football seasons of all time. Now, Burrow has a chance to expand on that legacy with an even more impre sive indeed, unprecedented achievement. With that, The Sporting News breaks down the extremely short list of players who have won the national championship, Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl in their playing careers: No quarterback has ever earned that distinctive trifecta of national championship, Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl. Its worth noting one quarterback who came agonizingly close to becoming the first quarterback to earn that distinctive triple crown: Cam Newton. The former Demetrius Harris Jersey Auburn quarterback led the Tigers to the 2010 BCS championship, a season in which he also won the Heisman Trophy. He went No. 1 in the 2011 NFL Draft and, five years later, led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50, a year in which he was also named NFL MVP. But a lackluster performance against Von Miller and the Broncos kept Newton out of that impre sive fraternity. That said, there have been three non-quarterback players who achieved that elusive achievement: running backs Tony Dorsett (Pitt, Cowboys) and Marcus Allen (USC, Raiders), and defensive back Charles Woodson (Michigan, Packers).HeismanNational championshipSuper BowlTony Dorsett1976197612Marcus Allen1981197828Charles Woodson1997199745Dorsett and Allen's respective achievements are also notable, even among that exclusive list.Dorsett in 1977 became the first player to win the college football national championship, then win the Super Bowl the next year (with the Cowboys). Allen, meanwhile, is the only player in football history to claim a national championship, Heisman Trophy, Super Bowl championship, NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP.However, none of those players was the No. 1 overall pick, as was Burrow: They went No. 2, No. 10 and No. 4 in the 1977, 1982 and 1998 NFL drafts, respectively. Should Burrow lead the Bengals to a win in Super Bowl 56, it would be one small tick he could claim over his fellow first-rounders who otherwise achieved the same feat. To date, only Joe Namath of Alabama and Joe Montana of Notre Dame have won a national championship in college and gone on to quarterback a Super Bowl-winning team. Neither won the Heisman Trophy.Namath led the Crimson Tide to a 10 Marco Wilson Jersey -1 season in 1964 and a championship by both the AP and UPI polls before a 21-17 lo s to Texas in the Orange Bowl. He later led the upstart AFL Jets to a win over the NFLs Colts in Super Bowl 3.Montana did the same for the Fighting Irish, leading them to an 11-1 record and consensus national title in 1977, their lone blemish a 20-13 lo s to Ole Mi s. Montana would go on to set the standard for Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks, leading the 49ers to a 4-0 record with wins in Super Bowls 16, 19, 23 and 24.Could Burrow become the third Joe to win the ultimate prize in college football and the NFL? If he did, he would replicate the feat faster than either of his two predece sors: Namath and Montana had five and four years between their national championships and Super Bowls, respectively. For Burrow, it would be only two. Navy's Roger Staubach and Stanford's Jim Plunkett are other quarterbacks who claim two thirds of the championship/Heisman/Super Bowl triple crown. Unlike Namath and Montana, they dont have national championships. But they do have the greatest individual award in all of sports: The Heisman Trophy.Staubach won the 1963 Heisman Trophy off a campaign in which he led the Midshipmen to a 9-1 season and No. 2 overall ranking. Staubach that season completed 128 of 192 pa ses (66.7 percent) for 1,702 yards and seven touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also rushed 158 times for 371 yards and nine touchdowns. He would later go on to lead Dallas to victories in Super Bowls 6 and 8; he was Super Bowl MVP in the latter, becoming the first of four players to win a Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl MVP (the other three being Plunkett, Allen and Desmond Howard).Plunkett led the Cardinal to a 9-3 Arizona Cardinals Jersey record in 1970, a season in which he completed 211 of 388 pa ses for 2,980 yards and 19 touchdowns to 19 interceptions. He had 87 rushes for 209 yards and three more scores. Following stints with the Patriots and 49ers, Plunkett led the Raiders to victories in Super Bowl 15 and 18, earning MVP in the former.Other players to have won a Heisman Trophy and a Super Bowl include:Paul Hornung (1956 Heisman, Super Bowl 1)John Huarte (1964 Heisman, Super Bowl 4)Mike Garrett (1965 Heisman, Super Bowl 4)Tony Dorsett (1976 Heisman, Super Bowl 12)Marcus Allen (1991 Heisman, Super Bowl 18)George Rogers (1980 Heisman, Super Bowl 22)Desmond Howard (1993 Heisman, Super Bowl 31)Charles Woodson (1996 Heisman, Super Bowl 45) Unsurprisingly, several top NFL draft picks have enjoyed Super Bowl succe s. A total of nine quarterbacks drafted No. 1 overall have gone onto earn a Lombardi Trophy:Joe Namath (1965)*: Super Bowl 3Terry Bradshaw (1970): Super Bowls 9, 10, 13, 14Jim Plunkett (1971): Super Bowl 15, 18John Elway (1983): Super Bowls 32, 33Troy Aikman (1989): Super Bowl 27, 28, 30Drew Bledsoe (1993): Super Bowl 36Peyton Manning (1998): Super Bowl 41, 50David Carr (2002): Super Bowl 46Eli Manning (2004): Super Bowl 42, 46Jared Goff, who went No. 1 in the 2016 NFL Draft, led the Rams to Super Bowl 53, where they lost 13-3 to the Patriots. Curiously, quarterback Matthew Stafford the top overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft is likewise making his debut in Super Bowl 56.Still more non-quarterback players have gone No. 1 overall and won a Super Bowl:Paul Hornung (1957): Super Bowl 1Bubba Smith (1967): Super Bowl 5John Matuszak (1973): Super Bowl 11, 15Ed Too Tall Jones (1974): Won Super Bowl 12George Rogers (1981): Antonio Hamilton Jersey Super Bowl 22Ru sell Maryland (1991): Super Bowl 27, 28 30Keyshawn Johnson (1996): Super Bowl 37Orlando Pace (1997): Won Super Bowl 34Eric Fisher (2013): Won Super Bowl 54 Related Articles
