It is often hard to explain to kids what and why certain things are happening to them, especially when they experience sudden changes to their body. Diabetes can do this. As their parents, it is our responsibility to hold their hand and help them understand that no matter what happens they will not go through with it alone.
The first step to being there for your child is understanding the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes comes in without notice or warning and is out to test your child’s endurance and resilience. Every parent should understand and tell their kids that this type of diabetes is not their fault. One’s diet is not a factor. Possible causes could be traced to heredity, genetics, and race.
Juvenile diabetes starts when your child’s immune system attacks the pancreas, and in doing so hindering the production of insulin. Insulin is vital in moving sugar around the body. Without it, the sugar stays in the bloodstream. Early symptoms include increased thirst and urination, weight loss, yeast infection for girls, fatigue, to name a few.
Type 2 Diabetes
Before, only adults had to worry about Type 2 diabetes. Now, as obesity and high blood pressure continue to rise among kids, so does this condition. The problem does not involve the lack of insulin. Rather, your child’s body is having difficulty responding to it which leads to glucose or sugar build up in the blood.
Unlike Type 1, Type 2 diabetes can be prevented. The key is a healthier lifestyle, which involves more physical activities, well-balanced diet, and less sugar intake. If your child is suddenly experiencing dry mouth, sudden weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, and frequent urination, it is best to have them checked immediately.
Whether your child has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, it is highly recommended to consult with your local pediatrician or family doctor right away.
