The Hindu University of America offers classes in Hindu-based philosophical systems that emphasize critical thinking, morality, and introspection. It trains students for service, leadership and engagement in the world by promoting Hindu culture and traditions in an academically independent environment. This course provides an initial reflection on the fundamental themes and concepts of Hinduism that will lead to a better comprehension of the general ground of the numerous practices and traditions that fall under the framework of Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism. The course will explore the fundamental notions of Hinduism and will cover an Ontology of important Sanskrit words and the fundamental concepts that form the basis of practices, cosmology and manifestations that comprise Sanatana Dharma. The course will also provide thoughts as well as perspectives about these key notions, based on various texts like those of the Vedas, Upanishads, Itihaasa Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavad-Gita and Puranas. It isn't an Hinduism 101 course!The course will be able to examine the diverse issues that arise from the convergence with Hindu and western philosophy. The Hindu worldview founded on Dharma and its focus on responsibilities and duties as well as the sustainability and the meaning of existence will be compared with modern ideologies and their emphasis on privileges and rights and competition, exploiter-exploited binary and the survival of the strongest. The distinction between an academic discourse and a power discourse will be outlined as two alternative models. The course will provide an overview of and understanding of the structure of the curriculum provided at the Hindu University of America i.e. the context and the framework that underpins the design. The course will also examine the effects of colonial influence on the curriculum.

In addition, it differentiates colonial and postcolonial perspectives that comprise the popular knowledge about Hinduism as opposed to the lived real-world experience of Hindus and will highlight the significance and significance of Hindu studies in a deeply emotional as well as inspiring way.

Course Learning Objectives:
In this course , students can:
A) Explore alternative models, choices and routes offered by the Hindu Studies Program
B) Separate the fundamental ideas and concepts that form the Foundations of Hindu Dharma
C) Analyze different elective subjects and courses that are offered: Sanskrit Studies, Texts and Traditions Yoga Studies, History and Method, Post-Colonial Hindu studies and Conflict and Peace studies.
D) Choose between the paths that lead to the deep investigation of Hindu thought or to deeper engagement with western thinking from the Hindu viewpoint
E) Explore and design ways for engaging within and engagement with Hindu Studies curricula

Class Structure:
There is at least 1.5 contacts with faculty members each week. The course is organized to encourage discussions and debates using self-study and reflection every week. The content that is discussed in the class will end after 90 minutes of discussion, time for discussion is open to all participants and will last for another 30 minutes. Students are required to write an essay of a short length. The essays need not be high-quality academic papers but they must be based on students' reflections on the knowledge they have absorbed and have absorbed so far as well as what has touched and impressed them greatly.
