The skin is our largest organ, but we somehow tend to neglect it often. There are many skin conditions that are temporary and can be treated at home safely. However, there are also many different skin conditions that can cause some serious damage and a reason to be concerned about your health. It is advised to perform your own skin exams at home, whenever you can, but sometimes, those exams should be done by professionals. So, let’s see what skin problems need immediate attention from your dermatologist.

Very Dry Skin

Dry skin is not deadly, but it can cause some serious problems. Very dry skin can be the cause of skin infections and inflammations which can be a threat to your health and can be extremely painful. As we age, our skin produces less oil, which makes the skin dryer and itchier. The estimates of professionals is that a lot of people are prone to dryness due to low levels of barrier protein in the outer layer of the skin. Also, dryness tends to be worse in the winter, but there are people who have these problems in the summer, too. If you do have dry skin issues, it is advised to talk to your dermatology specialists to help you find the right moisturizers.

Persistent Bruising

You may notice that your skin bruises easily. If it happens that you bump your arm and get a bruise that disappears in a few days, there is no reason to be concerned. However, if that bruising is more persistent and lasts longer, it may point out that something is wrong. Usually, this can be a sight of blood clotting. If you notice this, you should visit your doctor and figure out what is causing those pesky bruises that won’t go away. The suspect list also includes blood thinners or even certain blood cancers.

Acne and Acne-like Bumps

A lot of people get acne, including adults. Acne is more common in women during hormonal changes of menopause, but it is a treatable condition at any age. However, it may not be acne that is appearing on your skin. Many adults actually suffer from a condition that looks like acne, but it is in fact called rosacea. This condition typically shows up as red puss-filled bumps over the nose and cheeks. If you have rosacea, you may also have gritty-feeling eyes. The tell-tale sign that you suffer from this condition is the flushing over the face and it can be triggered by hot beverages, spicy food, hot showers, strong emotions, exercising, and similar activities.

Flat Dark Spots

The good news here is that these flat dark spots you may have found on your back, chest, hands, or anywhere else are not skin cancer. These are also known as liver spots or age spots, but what dermatologists call them is solar lentigines. These are usually tan or brown and are very common in people with fair skin.

However, if you have a lot of these little sports, your skin is trying to tell you something. Usually, this is the sign that you have had a lot of sun exposure that cumulated over the years. This means that there probably are contributions to skin aging and the risk of skin cancer. However, it’s never too late to start applying plenty of sunscreen t throughout the whole year in order to reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature wrinkles.

Cysts

Skin cysts are a common condition that can occur for many different reasons. They can be caused by injury, clogged pores, spontaneous, infection, etc. Also, they can occur on any part of the body and are usually painless and grow slowly. It can also happen that they blend in nicely with the surrounding skin, but you can feel them when you put pressure on that location. Luckily, cysts are highly treatable, and you should never ‘pop’ them at home! Instead, go to your dermatologist and see what they can do about it and they will usually remove them and provide advice on how to prevent and treat them.

As the biggest organ that protects the rest of our organism, the skin can develop certain conditions. It is always exposed to the sun, cold and hot air, and many other elements. That is why it is important to know about all the common problems that may occur. Plus, you should make a routine of visiting your dermatologist at least once a year. All of these conditions are highly treatable, and regular exams can catch bigger issues early and provide treatment and prevention.
