A compressed air tank or "carrying tank" is a convenient workshop or garage tool that allows you to store compressed air in a portable, easy-to-use device. You can use any type of air compressor to fill compressed air into the storage tank, and then transport the storage tank to where it is needed. Compressed air tanks are most commonly used to fill tires (in cars, bicycles, trailers, ATVs, etc.), but are also useful for applications that use blowers. These gas cylinders are usually too small for fast operation of pneumatic tools.

In many cases, its relatively light weight and large size make portable compressed air tanks more useful in the field than portable air compressors. For example, if you need compressed air in any remote area where there is no electricity to run the compressor, you can fill a gas storage tank at home (or at a gas station or hardware store when you go out) and then bring it to the scene. Compressed air tanks are much lighter than air compressors with similarly sized tanks, and are much larger than those on highly portable compressors such as pancake compressors.

Compressed air tank size and rating
Compressed air tanks come in different sizes, and the capacity is measured in gallons of compressed air. Common sizes include five, seven, nine, ten and eleven gallons. A 10 gallon or larger size may be more suitable for various applications, while a smaller 5 gallon or 7 gallon water tank is easier to carry and takes up less space.

To estimate how the storage tank capacity is converted to actual air volume, remember that a 7.5-gallon storage tank capacity equals one cubic foot of volume. The volume of a small car tire is about one cubic foot. This means that a seven-gallon air tank does not have enough capacity to fill completely flat small car tires.

In addition to capacity, compressed air tanks also have a maximum pressure rating measured in pounds per square inch or psi. Common ratings range from 125 psi to over 150 psi. This rating indicates the maximum air pressure that the fuel tank can safely handle. However, it is best not to fill the fuel tank to the maximum pressure level, because the air pressure will increase as the heat increases. Therefore, for example, if the fuel tank is placed in the sun, the pressure in the fuel tank will rise even without increasing the air. If the storage tank is completely filled, the pressure may exceed the rated maximum pressure and cause rupture.

Portable compressed air tank assembly
The components of the portable compressed air tank provide all the functions needed for easy and safe use. You will usually find the following components on these tools:

Air filling valve: a valve connected when the compressor is used to fill the tank.
Air shut-off valve: When not in use, turn the knob to prevent air leakage from the tank.
Barometer: indicates the air pressure in the gas tank and the fullness of the gas tank.
Pressure tank: A rated pressure tank equipped with compressed air.
Flexible hose: a hose used to transport compressed air from a storage tank. The hose can be connected to the water tank via a threaded connection or a quick connection connection.
Universal joints: Some water tanks include universal quick-connect joints to easily change hose types.
