Overview

Puerto Galeras is an archipelagoof islands off the coast of Mindoro in the Visayas region of the Philippines. The archipelago consists of three major islands: Batan Grande, Batan and Buho. The islands are separated by deep channels filled with mangrove swamps. The largest island, Batan Grande, measures approximately 4 km long and 1.5 km wide. The second largest island, Batan, measures about 3 km long and 0.8 km wide. Finally, Buho Island measures about 2.4 km long and 0.6 km wide.

Batan Grande is the location of the city of Puerto Galera, the capital of Oriental Mindoro. The city was founded in 1885 by Spanish colonizers who named it after the nearby port of Galera. The nameof the city comes from the word “galera” which means “ship” in Spanish. Today, the city is a major tourist destination in the Philippines.
